WARRENTON I am seriously at a loss for words. Warrenton walked us 15 times and we only scored 8 runs. I dont even know how that is mathematically possible. It is so frustrating, because we see the potential our girls have. I know a lot of coaches say that, but this team seriously has so much talent and they have been playing together so long, coach Bekah Wirkkala said after her Comets lost a 9-8 non-league softball game at Warrenton March 19.

The Lady Comets had an 8-0 lead, but the Lady Warriors surged ahead with six runs in the fourth frame and three more in the bottom of the fifth. Warrenton scored nine runs with only three base hits. The game was halted after five innings due to rain.

Alexa York started in the circle for Naselle and she had a strikeout, walked five and hit one batter. In the fourth inning Taylor Eaton took over when a rib injury began to bother York. Eaton walked four and hit four Lady Warriors. York came back in to pitch in the fifth frame with the bases loaded and promptly walked in the go-ahead run before getting out of the jam.

Kirsten Scrabeck got the Lady Comets on the board in the top of the first inning when she slammed a two-RBI double to deep left field. Vicki Corona and Shae Trost walked and Makenzie Mathews singled to load the bases prior to Scrabecks blast. In the second inning Corona doubled to score Leeland, who had walked. Matthews then singled home Corona to put Naselle ahead 5-0.

In the fourth frame Naselle plated three runs. Mathews and Scrabeck walked, Eaton slapped a single to score Matthews and then Breanna Smith and Corona walked with the bases loaded to score two more runs.

Our defense was solid. Vicki played wonderful at second base and Kendra Leeland was fabulous behind the plate. We hit alright, just terrible base running. We would tell them to go and they would stay. We would tell them to stay and then they would get thrown out. Too many base running mistakes and swinging at terrible pitches did us in,a coach Wirkkala lamented.

Brooke Cederberg homered to lead off the fifth for Warrenton. She was the starting pitcher and Aleah Hobbs picked up the win in relief. Eaton absorbed the loss.

Corona was 1-1 with two walks and Scrabeck was 1-3. Makayla Matthews, York, Smith, Eaton, Makenzie Mathews all walked, Trost got on base twice with walks and Leeland drew three free passes for the Lady Comets. Makenzie Mathews and Eaton singled for Naselle.

Our defense was so solid the entire game. Warrenton didnt score until the fourth inning. Vicki (Corona) had all three outs at second base in the first inning, in the second inning Kendra (Leeland) chased down a swinging bunt and threw to Kenzie (Mathews) at first for an awesome out. We got them three-up and three-down in the third inning and then we gave up four walks and three hit by pitches and they had two hits to cut our lead to 8-6, coach Wirkkala explained.

In the fifth inning Warrenton scored their runs on Cedergergs home run and then four walks and a hit by pitch gave the Lady Warriors three runs and the win. Warrenton is now 2-0 and Naselle is 0-2.
