Greenhead Slough: Habitat for birds and other wildlife

This large wetland is home to Wood Ducks, Mallards and the Song Sparrow, as well as other birds.

In 2014 the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge completed the restoration of Greenhead Slough, which since then has benefited a diversity of species, including salmon, shorebirds, waterfowl and other migrating birds. An added benefit has also been an overall improvement in the health of Willapa Bay.

Anytime is a good time to walk the trail at Greenhead Slough. Kinglets flit through the tall trees, the Pacific Wren can be seen and heard in the understory and Northern Flickers can be heard calling and tapping from deep in the woods. The wetland may provide a view of a Wood Duck or a Mallard or two. The trail not only offers walkers/hikers the company of the birds, but it also provides solace from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

To get to Greenhead Slough travel on U.S. Highway 101 past the Bear River and down the straight away for about 1 mile. You will see the new bridge over the slough on the right. Turn right at the bridge and drive into the parking lot. The trail begins there.
