OYSTERVILLE — Mary Garvey will lead the talk at the Oysterville Schoolhouse Lecture series on Thursday, April 20. She will discuss her work as a songwriter, and will be singing some of her favorites based on local stories. She is hopeful that both Observer columnist Cate Gable and KMUN’s Joanne Rideout will join her. Garvey works as a clerk at the Washington State University Extension Office in Long Beach. “Mary Garvey and Friend(s)” will begin their songs and stories at 10 a.m. The public is invited to come and to stay for the short question and answer period following the 50-minute presentation.

LONG BEACH — The American Legion will hold a Walk for Veterans through downtown Long Beach on April 21 beginning at 1 p.m. The walk will start and end at Veterans Field in Long Beach. The registration fee is $20 and will include a T-shirt and water/snack. Leading the Walk will be American Legion Department of Washington Commander Wayne Elston. The purpose of this Walk is to raise public awareness about the crucial issues facing America’s veterans and their families. Veterans still have difficulty receiving health care in a timely manner and too many still have to wait years to have their disability claims resolved. Organizers noted we “owe it to those who served our country to never forget the sacrifice and devotion of veterans and their families. We are walking for those who have marched for freedom. Many are no longer able to do so for themselves.” Long Beach Mayor Jerry Phillips will give remarks prior to the walk. TOKELAND — The Tokeland Hotel will be hosting The Tokeland All School Reunion on Saturday April 22 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. “A Trip Back In Time To What Was Tokeland And The School, An Afternoon Of Memories.” This event is open only to anyone who attended Tokeland School at any time and their spouses. The reunion will feature a home movie made by Lois Sherlock which include school playground scenes of the kids in the 1950s and ‘60s, footage of a large winter storm, the North Cove Coast Guard Station washing away, the ship that ran aground on the Grayland beach in 1959, as well as lots of footage of the adults and kids of the time that made Tokeland what it was in those days. Many pictures of Tokeland from times past will also be seen on the big screen, and memories from times past will be shared. The Hotel will be having a buffet dinner for all the attendees. SOUTH BEND — Pacific County Republicans will hold their annual Lincoln Dinner will be held on Saturday, April 22 at the Willapa Harbor Community Center in South Bend. ILWACO — WSU Master Gardeners of Pacific County are hosting “Sustainable Gardening by Propagating Plants,” on Saturday, April 22 at Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum, 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco. Master Gardeners will assist participants in using successful ways to propagate plants with stem cuttings. Bring a small knife for use during the workshop. The workshop runs from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and the plant clinic is from 10 a.m. to noon the Museum. If possible, bring samples of your plant problem and the Master Gardeners will help solve the problem.

SURFSIDE — The second Tsunami Run/Walk is set for Saturday, April 22 at 350th and G Street in Surfside. This is 3.2K event. Rosburg Community Club Chicken Dinner

ROSBURG — The ladies of the Rosburg Community Club (RCC) are in a “fowl” mood and chickens are scurrying about looking for hiding places as preparations are underway for the RCC’s Chicken Dinner on Sunday, April 23 at the Rosburg Hall. The dinner, always a treat to the taste buds, starts at 11:30 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. Not surprisingly, the meal will feature baked chicken, as well as mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, cranberry sauce, hot rolls, a huge salad bar, coffee, punch and a selection of dessert items. This is another one of those “you don’t want to miss” events put on by the ladies of the Rosburg Community Club. Meal prices will be: $10 for adults and teens, $5 for children age 6 to 12, and, $3 for ages 3 to 5.

RAYMOND — On April 23, at 2 p.m., Sunday Afternoon Live is pleased to present an encore performance of a popular favorite, Everything Fitz, a family band featuring the high-energy fiddling and percussive step dancing of four of Canada’s finest young musicians. FORT CLATSOP — Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Fort Clatsop is hosting the next In Their Footsteps free speaker series event, entitled, “Identification and Preservation of Jean Baptiste Charbonneau’s Grave” with Michael Hanley and Roger Wendlick on Sunday, April 23, at 1 p.m. Michael Hanley, a rancher, illustrator and author of several books about eastern Oregon, was instrumental in identifying and preserving the grave of Jean Baptiste Charbonneau in the 1960s. Roger Wendlick spent decades acquiring the premier collection of literature related to the Lewis and Clark Expedition. His collection is now at Lewis & Clark College in Portland. Hanley and Wendlick were very involved in the refurbishing and rededication of the gravesite in 2000. Both historians are delightful and knowledgeable storytellers. PACIFIC COUTY — Peninsula Arts Association awards an annual scholarship to a student from the Ocean Beach School District, Naselle-Grays River School districts, or a home-schooled student. Graduating seniors with an interest in furthering their arts education are eligible and are urged to contact their school scholarship director and ask about the possibility of applying for this $1,000 scholarship. The scholarship is not restricted to college bound students, any graduate interested in pursuing further arts education through workshops, apprenticeships, or college classes may apply. Scholarship funds can be used for payment of classes or for art equipment or supplies. Selection is based on the required student essay, letters of recommendations, minimum grade point average, submitted art portfolio and an interview. Artwork is required at the interview. SEAVIEW — Peace of Mind Pacific County (POMPC) hosts Justice Mental Health Project Coordinator Rosanne McPhail for a free community education event Tuesday, April 25, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Peninsula Church Center Memorial Room, 5000 N Place in Seaview. The event begins with a free supper provided by Subway of Long Beach. The Justice Mental Health Project is a unique collaboration of groups and agencies working to understand and prevent situations of repeated jail time for people with substance abuse and other brain illnesses. Over the past 16 months the local team has examined these circumstances with input from many different sources. McPhail will talk about what changes have happened since the project began, what next steps are planned, and how local citizens can play a positive part in addressing these problems. ILWACO — For the fourth year in a row, the traditional Loyalty Days Weekend on Long Beach Peninsula begins with a local show featuring a variety of vocal, instrumental and comic talents from the area. The Loyalty Day Follies, a family-friendly event for all ages, will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 5 at the River City Playhouse in Ilwaco with a portion of the proceeds to be donated to the Loyalty Days Children’s Parade. Auditions for this unique talent show will be held on Thursday, April 27 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Playhouse, located on 127 Lake Street SE in Ilwaco. In addition, youngsters from Ocean Park and Long Beach Elementary School will play piano and sing with their classmates. Vocalists are asked to bring sheet music. Piano accompaniment is available at the audition as well as the performance. Patriotic songs are not required, but community and family-oriented material is welcome. ILWACO — Loyalty Day weekend is May 6 and May 7 with both days full of a variety of events that include the kid’s parade that starts at noon at the Port of Ilwaco; Blessing of the Fleet boats leave the dock at 1 p.m. escorted by the Cape Disappointment Coast Guard Lifeboat. There is an oyster feed at the Long Beach Elks Lodge from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., which is open to the public. On Sunday, May 3, Loyalty Day events continue. From 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. is the cowboy breakfast at the Peninsula Saddle Club grounds on Sandridge Road. Have a great breakfast at a great price. The Ilwaco Fire Department will offer free fire truck rides for kids from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. In downtown Long Beach there is a program including special guest General Randolph Staudenraus and speaker Margaret Harding as Mary Todd Lincoln. SOUTH BEND — The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency (PCEMA) is offering a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training course in Raymond. Training is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 4, May 5, May 6 and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Sunday, May 7. The course will be held at the Grays Harbor College Riverview Center 600 Washington Avenue in Raymond. Pre-registration is required and is limited to 24 participants. The CERT program is an all-risk, all-hazard training. CERT members receive 29 hours of initial training provided free of charge. The course is taught with classroom instruction for the first three days and practical exercises during the last day. Participants under the age of 18 must have parent/guardian permission to attend. Alzheimer’s Association family caregiver support groups provide a consistent and caring place for people to learn, share and gain emotional support from others who are also on a unique journey of providing care to a person with memory loss. ILWACO — The Willapa Bay and Long Beach Peninsula has been designated as a Site of International Importance within the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN). Join others at the WHSRN Designation Ceremony on International Migratory Bird Day on May 13 at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The program will include: Jackie Ferrier, Refuge manager at Willapa National Wildlife Refuge; Vanessa Loverti, Regional Shorebird Biologist for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; and Cheri Lloyd, local art teacher and Willapa Bay ambassador to the Copper River Delta WHSRN site in Alaska. The program begins at 2:30 p.m. The Willapa Bay and Long Beach Peninsula site is an important link that protects critical habitat for shorebirds across their long migrations. LONG BEACH — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge want you to contribute your interests and ideas on behalf of the new natural resource center on May 17 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Pacific Coast Cranberry Museum at 2907 Pioneer Rd., Long Beach, They are seeking public input to help meet their goals to: create a modern accessible refuge center; inspire education both indoors and outdoors; expand trail connections and systems; showcase the refuge’s uniqueness; create community space and address essential emergency needs earthquake/tsunami assembly area.
