Montesano led the way in just about everything when Ilwaco hosted a track meet Thursday.
The Bulldogs ran away with the boys and girls’ team titles, 100 points ahead of their closest rivals, including 1-2-3 sweeps in the boys’ 200 meters and girls’ 400 and 1,600 meters in a meet involving several schools, including the hosts and Naselle.
The bright spots for Naselle were two familiar names. Senior Jacob Pakenen won the pole vault, clearing 11-6 and sophomore Mylee Dunagan continued to excel, winning high jump (4-10) and long jump (14-8) while placing second in the 200 with a time of 30.26 seconds. Classmate Jason Gardner took third in the boys’ triple jump.
For Ilwaco, Mya Cunningham was the lone individual winner, taking the 800 meters in 2:52.47, seven seconds ahead of her nearest competitor; she finished fourth in the 400.
IHS senior Jacob Mathison placed third in the 800 meters and fourth in the 400. Junior Wade Smith was second in the pole vault, clearing 9-6 and sixth in the 200 meters, a race in which the first eight finishers had times within two seconds of each other.
Junior Caleb Brundage was third in javelin with a throw of 109-6. Classmate Gage Thorn placed fourth in the shot put with a distance of 35-2. Sophomore Cody Miller and junior Sammy Lloyd improved their times in the 1,600 meters, finishing third and fourth, though some way behind the winner.
Field events saw the other schools throwing farthest. IHS sophomore Madison Key was fifth in javelin with a throw of 76-1. NHS sophomore Paige Haataja was fourth in discus with 73-1, with classmate Jessica Underhill next with 70-6. Comet freshman Shaylee Suomela and senior Desirae Gifford were 1-2 in pole vault, clearing 5-6 and 5, respectively.
Hurdles attracted few runners. Ilwaco senior Abbiegail Williams had the only reported time in the 300 meters (1:10.5, a personal best) and Naselle freshman Sophia Colombo was third in the 100.
Raymond boys enjoyed successes: Chris Banker won the high jump, Kevin Hovis won triple jump and Austin Snodgrass won the shot; South Bend’s Robby Stigal won the discus.
Next for the local teams is a meet at Naselle on Thursday, March 28.
