Trevor Hutson’s parents, Chris Hutson and Stacey Knepper, have kids on both teams (one lives with each parent). They wore jerseys that had one team in the front and one in back.

RAYMOND — McCartney Maden scored three touchdowns in the first 12:10 and Ilwaco trailed 24-0 by halftime in a 24-8 loss to Raymond Friday, Oct. 25.

Raymond, boosted by Maden’s running and Jose Delgado’s kicking, clinched third place in the Pacific League’s Coastal Division at 3-2. Ilwaco, now 2-2, will finish fourth-place no matter what, but will look to upset first-place Pe Ell/Willapa Valley on homecoming next week.

The Fishermen had logistic troubles to open the game. They barely got 11 men on the field to receive the opening kickoff, which was a touchback by the strong-legged Delgado. Ilwaco then committed an illegal procedure on the opening snap, and went three-and out.

A long punt return set up Raymond at the Ilwaco 25, and six plays later Maden scored a five-yard touchdown just 4:09 into the game. On Raymond’s next possession, Maden had a 40-yard touchdown run, getting to the outside and turning the corner, for a 14-0 lead with 4:18 to go. Maden added a 52-yard score on third-and-thirteen to put the Seagulls up by three touchdowns just 10 seconds into the second quarter.

The Seagulls were patient with their running game, getting stuffed on some runs up the middle but using them to help set up Maden for big plays on the outside.

Delgado nailed all three extra points, improving to 19 for 21 on the year. He helped Raymond dominate field position with touchbacks on the first three kickoffs. He then nailed a 29-yard field goal, a rare occurrence in the region, to make it 24-0 with 2:55 in the half.

“We just weren’t ready in the first half,” Trevor Hutson said. “In the second half, we came out fired up; coach gave us a talking to.”

Hutson moved from running back to quarterback in the second half, becoming the third player to play the position for Ilwaco this year, along with Wilkin and Parker Kaech.

Coach Sean Cease said the team runs the same offense regardless of who is at quarterback.

“It’s not so much [changing] what we’re calling as sometimes we make a change to try to get a spark. And that’s really what it’s about, seeing who’s going to give us a spark on that night.”

The Fishermen went thirteen plays and 66 yards on their first drive of the second half. But Bubba Douglas had a touchdown run called back on holding, and then Raymond recovered a fumble at their own five with just 3:03 remaining in the third.

After a Raymond punt, Hutson scored a 17-yard touchdown to finish an eight-play, 64-yard drive. He ran in the two-point conversion, making it a two-score game with 8:57 left.

But Raymond ran the clock down to 1:03 on its next possession, which ended in Delgado missing a 23-yard field goal. An interception of Hutson with 39 seconds left sealed the deal.

Brothers on opposing teams

Hutson has a brother on the Seagulls team. Skylar Hutson, a freshman, was listed at tight end and defensive back but did not see the field much.

For Trevor, a senior, it was his first and only opportunity to play against his brother.

“He doesn’t play much yet, but he’ll be good,” Trevor said of Skylar. “He’s as big as me and he’s just a freshman. We’ve been talking about [playing against each other]. We watched game film of each other.”

Ilwaco’s homecoming game against Pe Ell/Willapa Valley is at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1.
