ILWACO — Elle Personius scored two second-half goals and Erika Glenn scored in the first half for a 3-1 Ilwaco victory over the Raymond-South Bend Rip Tides Monday, Sept. 16.

Freshman Justyce Patana threatened the defense all game with her quick moves. It paid off early. In the tenth minute, Patana took off through the defense. Glenn, a midfielder, ran ahead and got open for a pass, then dribbled near the side of the goal and angled it in for the 1-0 lead.

The Tides nearly got on the board first as Ana Quintana dove on the ground for an offensive rebound right at the goal. Referees ruled that she used her hand to push the ball across. Shortly afterward, Faith Richardson stopped a shot by Tides star Kyra Gardner. The only Tide point came on a short-range penalty kick by Gardner that tied it at one at the end of the first half.

Glenn credited Richardson, and an overall focus on containing Gardner, for keeping the visitors’ score down.

“Faith made a lot of stops on really tough shots,” Glenn said. “Kyra Gardner’s pretty much their whole team, so we focused on her. We had Sunny (Kemmer) or me on her all the time.”

Three minutes into the second half, Glenn found open space near the left sideline and got the ball to Personius there. Personius scored on a shot that she intended as a pass, but that instead rolled in.

“It was supposed to be a cross (pass) for our forwards near the goal. Their goalie just missed it, so it was a kind of a lucky shot,” Personius said.

Personius knocked in her second goal of the half in the 54th minute, bending a penalty kick over the defensive line and off the hands of the goalie.
