- Hallie Woodby, 11, is announced as first runner-up in the heaviest aggregate catch competition at the Black Lake Fishing Derby on April 27. She caught a total weight of 6.2 pounds, just ahead of her sister Macy, who finished third with 5.5 pounds total.
ILWACO — A local 10-year-old reeled in more than 11 pounds of fish on a wet and windy morning last Saturday — and won a charter trip for his troubles.
Less-than-ideal conditions couldn’t put a damper on the 30th annual Black Lake Fishing Derby in Ilwaco on April 27, which drew about 150 youngsters and their families to compete for fun prizes, eat good food and make lasting memories fishing for trout.
The biggest fish of the derby went to Clair Rogers, 10, who caught a 3.85-pound trout that won her the grand prize for the 7-10 age group. She won a fishing pole, tackle and trout net for her catch, donated by generous local sponsors to the winners and runners-up in each of the age groups.
Another 10-year-old, Adam Wilson, won the grand prize for the heaviest aggregate catch, with the total weight coming in at 11.35 pounds. He won a free charter trip for himself and one adult, while the other runners-up in the aggregate contest also won free charters, which were donated by Coho Charters, Coho Sally and Seabreeze Charters.
Black Lake was the recipient of trout that were planted in its waters leading up to the fishing derby by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The derby started at 7 a.m., with the official weigh-in taking place at 10 a.m. by volunteers who stayed in good spirits throughout the morning.
Englund Marine donated fishing gear, floats, hooks and weights for the event, while Jack’s Country Store donated tackle boxes, poles and toys. Funland in Long Beach donated 125 passes for two rounds of laser tag, and Spawn Fly Fish and Klineline Kids Fishing partnered again to donate fishing poles and reels to participants.
