Pacific County Historical Society annual meeting

NASELLE — The Annual Meeting of the Pacific County Historical Society will be at Appelo Archive Center in Naselle, 1056 State Route 4, on Sunday, March 16 from 1-3 p.m. It will be a great opportunity to sample some authentic Finnish pulla bread with great coffee, hear a terrific speaker, and visit Appelo Archives great display areas afterwards. This year’s guest speaker is John C. Hughes, chief oral historian for the Washington Office of the Secretary of State. He retired as editor and publisher of The Daily World in Aberdeen in 2008 after a 42-year career that saw him win awards for investigative reporting, historical features, editorials and columns. An alumnus of the University of Puget Sound and the University of Maryland, he is a trustee of the Washington State Historical Society and has contributed to several Northwest history books, including his latest, “Lightning Boldt: Judge George H. Boldt, and a Defining Moment in Tribal Sovereignty.” Appelo Archives Cafe will be open with refreshments from this authentically Finnish and Norwegian cafe! Register for Seafood Chowder Cookoff

OCEAN PARK — The Surfside Homeowners Association Community Relations Committee is holding a Seafood Chowder Cookoff at noon March 22 at the Oysterville Schoolhouse, 3322 School Road in Ocean Park. Entries are free with preregistration; a minimum of six quarts of chowder per entry needs to be at the schoolhouse by 11:45 a.m. March 22. Taste and vote, from noon to 2 p.m., costs $5 plus a nonperishable food item donation. The awards will follow at 2:15 p.m. The event also includes a raffle, baked goods for sale and music by Bruce Mihalek. All proceeds will go to the Ocean Park Food Bank.
