Two race wins for Ilwaco boys; Cunningham leads girls’ performances

RAYMOND — Wins in two races signaled Ilwaco’s drive to advance toward the 2B WIAA state championships. The Fishermen runners are one race away from qualifying, with the District 4 meet set for Friday at Chehalis.

At Raymond last Friday, sophomore Cody Miller won the 1,600 meters in 3:14.78, just ahead of junior teammate Sammy Lloyd in second. Senior Jacob Mathison won the 800 with 2:17.77 just ahead of Lloyd, who ran a personal record (PR) time of 2:19.17.

Their points, and those of teammates, placed Ilwaco second in team scoring, tied with Raymond but both way behind runaway winners North Beach, which also won the girls’ meet.

In pole vault, IHS junior Wade Smith placed second with a PR of 10-6 and third in the 400 with a PR of 56.21 seconds, just ahead of Mathison; Smith was fifth in the 200.

Mathison, Lloyd, Miller and Smith teamed to win the 4×400 relay.

Freshman Druv Athmanathan was third in the 3,200. Senior Moises Mendez Hernandez was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a PR of 52 seconds.

Raymond senior Austin Snodgrass won the shot put with 50-0.5; South Bend’s Robby Stigall was third with a PR of 48-1. Ilwaco’s Gage Thorne placed seventh. Stigall won the discus with a PR of 159-9 with Snodgrass second.

Raymond sophomore Chris Banker won the high jump, clearing 6 feet. Junior teammate Isaac Schlueter won the long jump with a leap of 18-5.5.

South Bend senior Ferrill Johnson was third in javelin with a PR of 125-8; Ilwaco’s Caleb Brundage placed sixth.

In the 100, Snodgrass won with a PR of 11.34 with Schlueter third and Banker fourth. Two Raymond seniors, Kai Phelps and Logan Frank, placed third and fourth in the 200, both with PRs.

Frank, Snodgrass, Schlueter and Banker combined to win the 4×100 relay. South Bend’s Johnson ran with Jaron Xayabandith, Elijah Karchesy and Carson Ridderbush for fourth. An Ilwaco team of Lucas Skillings, Abraham Mendez Hernandez, Caden Perez and Zach Jewell was sixth.

The girls’ meet was dominated by North Beach, with South Bend placing third. In the 1,600, Ilwaco junior Mya Cunningham was second in 6:23.11, fourth in the 800 and fifth in the 200.

Raymond sophomore Ava Baugher won the high jump with a clearance of 4-8 and placed third in triple jump with a PR of 28 feet, one inch behind second-place South Bend junior Dakota Bale with a PR of 29-1.

South Bend senior Mackenzie Kuiken won the 100-meter hurdles with a PR of 18.01. Classmate Aoki Phimmasone won the 200 and was second in the 100, a race which saw Ilwaco senior Abbiegail Williams improve her PR to 15.17; IHS sophomore Madison Key also had a PR with 15.33.

Williams placed fifth in the 3,200. Juliet Perez had a PR of 26-7 in shot put. Williams, Cunningham, Key and sophomore Sophia Bailey teamed to place fourth in the 4×100 relay.

South Bend’s Avalyn Stigall and Emily Howell placed second and third in the discus and Howell was fifth in javelin.

In relays, Raymond’s Ava Baugher teamed with Madelyn Baugher, Mary Indalecio Loza and Serenity Smith to place second in the 4×400. South Bend’s Phimmasone, Bale, Jaylee Capps and Olivia Milton were second in the 4×200; a team of Kuiken, Phimmasone, Milton and Stigall placed third in the 4×100.
