LONGVIEW — On Tuesdays at noon WSU Master Gardeners present weekly free online programs. In addition, for those able to travel to Longview, there are occasional in-depth in-person classes. The following classes are online unless otherwise noted.
May 7: Growing a Red Tomato in the PNW — Our short growing season makes it challenging to have nice ripe red tomatoes. Learn some tricks for enjoying your own juicy ripe tomatoes this summer. Bonus: old-fashioned tomato cages really don’t work well throughout the growing season. WSU Master Gardeners Alice Slusher will show you two easy options for supporting your tomato plants as they grow. Learn how to make a cattle panel tomato cage and how to create and use the Florida weave support system.
May 14: Controlling Moles — Got moles? It’s a common and unfortunate experience for property owners to see their dreams of a pristine lawn dashed by pesky moles. But fear not! WSU Master Gardener Sara Clark is here to share insights on the most effective ways to evict these unwanted guests including what methods work like a charm and which products are a waste of time and money.
May 21: Basics of Composting — WSU Master Gardener Gary Fredricks will teach how to effectively compost food wastes and garden material. Learn the different ways to compost and the advantages of each method. Find out how to prepare your garden for next year without spraying or tilling.
May 28: Do-it-Yourself “Irrigation” — Hot summer, wilted plants, and you are stuck holding the hose. There is a way out! WSU Master Gardener Jerry Winchell will explain how to construct a simple and inexpensive drip irrigation system. Learn how a drip irrigation system allows you the flexibility to reduce water use, save time, use less labor, and control weeds.
