Senior Jacob Mathison crosses the finishing line on his running career on the Ilwaco track and cross country teams in a 800-meter heat at the WIAA 2B championships in Yakima Friday.

YAKIMA — Jacob Mathison’s high school sports career ended with his customary politeness. He praised his coaches; and they applauded him.

The Ilwaco senior was Ilwaco’s lone boy at the WIAA 2B state meet. Running in an 800-meter qualifying heat Friday, he finished in 2:07.16 but did not advance to Saturday’s final.

Afterward, he reflected on his high school sports career, which was hit early by the covid-19 pandemic and included cross country; one year he was the only Fisherman runner at the state championships.

“It’s just been fun,” he said, commending coaches Sarah Taylor, who he has known since middle school, and Rob Cunningham. “She is definitely a great distance coach and he helped a lot with some individual help.”

Taylor and head coach Crystal Bell commended him for his cheerful service to IHS.

“Throughout his track career, he’s shown versatility running the 100, 200, 400, 800, 1,600 and was a strong starting leg for the boys 4×400 relay,” said Bell.

“Each year from 10th to 12th grade, he has improved his performances, demonstrating consistent dedication,” she added. “Jacob is a leader, both on and off the track. He led warm-ups, ensured the 4×400 relay baton was always secure and inspired his teammates with his reliability. Known for his sharp wit and humor, Jacob brought laughter and camaraderie to the team. His hard work, leadership and humor will be incredibly missed.”

Ilwaco sent one other competitor. Junior Mya Cunningham ran 6:08.81 in the 1,600 final on Thursday to place 13th. The winner, Josie McLaughlin of St. George’s High School in Spokane, finished in 5:11.90 with a teammate in second place.

Cunningham has been to state three years. She won a relay medal as a freshman and qualified for the 800 last year.

“Mya continues to improve and we look forward to one more track season with her,” said Taylor.

Bell said Cunningham began running the longer distance late in the season. “Mya gets out strong, races smart and has a fantastic kick that always blows me away,” the coach added. “She started the season running a time of 6:26.75, and in just four short weeks [she] took fifth place at districts.

“We are super proud of her and her work ethic. She will continue to grow and we’re excited to see what that looks like next season.”
