Letter: Landlords, please keep humanity in mind

Food for thought. Please bear with me. I met an elderly woman yesterday. She walks with a cane and speaks in a soft voice. She lives on a fixed income and is faced with a rent increase of a significant amount. She cannot afford this, is barely eking by already. She is seeking a new rental, though I doubt she’ll find one. Is this what we want as a society? Landlords do you really need that extra bump in income? Is it any wonder the homeless situation is only getting worse?

Please think about this. We are on this earth together. These are our neighbors. Many have given to our community in other ways and over many years. Rentals are not just assets and money generators, they are homes to people.

My husband and I are landlords too, so we know of what we speak. We know that there are repairs to be made, insurances to be paid, taxes to be honored. But there needs to be a humanity respected. Rent gouging may give you more money but you may be stripping an honest neighbor of her home. Please think again.
