Three Comets win their races
RAINIER — Team points were hard to wrestle from the winning home squad in a six-school girls’ track meet April 22.
Three Naselle athletes won events.
Freshman Karsen Green won the triple jump with a PR of 30:4.5, was third in the 3200m and third in the pole vault. Classmate June Miller won the 200 meters and was second in both the 400m and high jump. Sophomore Sophia Colombo won the 300m hurdles with a PR of 52.17 with freshman Halle Miller second, also in a PR of 52.75; Miller placed fourth in the 100m hurdles.
Sophomore Shaylee Suomela was fourth in the pole vault, freshman Klara Davis was fifth in shot put and junior Jessica Underhill fifth in discus.
Freshman Gus Burkhalter again led the Comet boys in a meet won by Napavine. He had a third-place finish in the 400m with a PR of 58.52, was third in the 200m and fourth in the long jump.
Sophomore Caesar Garcia was third in the 1600m, classmate Andy Rosas was fourth in triple jump and freshman Jerritt Wyatt fifth in shot put.
Up next: Next for Naselle is a league meet at Ocosta on May 1.
Ilwaco track and field
Fishermen boys win Mossyrock meet
MOSSYROCK — Ilwaco boys won a seven-school meet ahead of the hosts Tuesday, anchored by two event wins from senior Wade Smith. He won the 400 meters in 54.96 and won the long
jump with 18:03.00, both personal records.
Two Fishermen placed in the 800m. Senior Sammy Lloyd was second and sophomore Druv Athmanathan third. Lloyd was third in the 1600m and Athmanathan was second in the 3200m with freshman Devin Day third. The 300m hurdles saw senior Carter Humphreys second and freshman Erik Ortez third. In the shot put, freshman Christopher Arnett placed third with a PR of 34:04.00.
Several had fifth-place finishes, freshman Brexton Weidner in the 100m, classmate Michael Wright in the 200m and long jump, Athmanathan in the 1600m, senior Caleb Brundage on the shot put, senior Skyler Saltzman in the discus, and Humphreys and Smith tied in the high jump.
In the girls’ meet, IHS freshman Elsa Linquist won the 400m in 1:08.06 and also the 800m in 2:46.00. She placed third in the 200m in 31.80; all times were personal bests.
Senior Mya Cunningham was third in the 300m hurdles and sophomore Joy Bickle was fifth in the shot put.
The Astorian Invitational track meet
ASTORIA — Ilwaco took part in The Astorian Invitational track meet Saturday, April 26, with one individual win and some solid showings against Astoria, Seaside and Jewell schools.
Next for IHS is a May 1 trip to Winlock. The Fishermen will host their final home meet May 6 and honor seniors, including three-time state qualifier Mya Cunningham, who won a relay medal as a freshman, Valerie Salvador, and boys team members Sammy Lloyd, Wade Smith, Caleb Brundage, Carter Humphreys, Skyler Saltzman, Rigo Gonzalez-Sebastian, Noah Kraynak and Blake Finlay.
At Astoria Saturday, IHS freshman Elsa Linquist won the 1500 meters with a personal best of 5:38.23, placed second in the 3000m with 12:24.48, also a PR, and third in the 400m.
Cunningham was fourth in the 300m hurdles with a PR of 1:01.15 and fifth in the 200m.
The seniors led the way for the boys. Humphreys was third in the 300m hurdles with a PR of 49.05 and fourth in long jump, also with a PR of 16.3.
Lloyd was third in the 3000m; Satlzman was fourth in the discus; Smith was fourth in the pole vault; Brundage was fifth in the shot put and fifth in the javelin.
The freshmen contributed. Michael Wright placed third in the 200m with a PR of 25:56. Devin Day was third in the 800m ahead of teammates Blake Eisbrenner and Nolan Benson.
Eisbrenner was fourth in the 3000m with Day fifth.
Up next: Next for IHS is a May 1 trip to Winlock. The Fishermen will host their final home meet May 6 and honor seniors.
Naselle softball
The Naselle softball team split their two games this week, including a 10-9 win over Wahkiakum and a 12-5 loss to Ilwaco, bringing their record to 6-4 overall on the season.
Naselle is rose four spots to #12 in the latest WIAA state softball rankings among 28 1B teams across the state.
Up next: Naselle (6-4) will travel to take Lake Quinault on May 2.
Ilwaco softball
The Ilwaco softball team won their six straight game last week, beating Naselle 12-5 and sweeping North Beach in a double header, climbing to 7-4-1 on the season.
Ilwaco surged 10 spots to #15 in the latest WIAA state softball rankings among 47 2B teams across the state.
Up next: Ilwaco (7-4-1) will host Wahkiakum on May 6, followed by an away game at Hoquiam on May 7.
Raymond/South Bend Softball
The Raymond/South Bend softball team won two of their three games last week, including sweeping Morton/White Pass and Forks, improving to 10-2 overall on the season.
Raymond/South Bend slipped on spot to #4 in the WIAA state softball rankings among 47 2B teams across the state this week.
Up next: Raymond/South Bend (10-2) will travel to take on Rainier on May 1, followed by an away game at Pe Ell/Willapa Valley on May 5.
Pe Ell/Willapa Valley softball
The Pe Ell/Willapa Valley softball team won three games last week, including sweeping Chief Leschi in a double header and knocking off Rochester 15-6, bringing the Titans record to 10-3 overall on the season.
Pe Ell/Willapa Valley slipped fell two spots to #8 in the WIAA state softball rankings among 49 2B teams across the state.
Up next: Pe Ell/Willapa Valley (10-3) will host Elma on May 1, followed by a home game against Raymond/South Bend on May 5.
Ilwaco baseball
The Ilwaco baseball team split their games last week, including suffering their first loss of the season to Adna 11-5 before sweeping Chief Leschi in a double header and dropping a non-league game to Warrenton 7-3, bringing the Fishermen to 10-2 overall on the season.
Ilwaco (10-2) remains in first place in league play (9-0) while falling five spots to #9 in the WIAA state baseball rankings among 47 2B teams in the state.
Up next: Ilwaco (10-2) will host Naselle on May 1, followed by a home game against Wahkiakum on May 2.
Naselle baseball
After starting the season 2-3, the Naselle baseball team has reeled off six straight wins, including victories over Wahkiakum and Oakville last week, bringing the Comets to 8-4 overall on the season.
The Comets (8-4) remained #5 in the WIAA state baseball rankings among 39 1B teams in the state.
Up next: Naselle (8-4) will travel to take on Ilwaco on May 1, followed by a home game against Toutle Lake on May 5.
Raymond/South Bend baseball
The Raymond/South Bend baseball team split their doubleheader with Forks last week before falling to Ocosta 5-3, bringing the Ravens to 3-9 overall on the season.
The Ravens (3-9) fell three spots to #34 in the WIAA state baseball rankings among 47 2B teams in the state.
Up next: Raymond/South Bend (3-9) will host Pe/Ell Willapa Valley on May 2, followed by an away game at North Beach on May 5.
Ilwaco soccer
The Ilwaco boys soccer team fell to 0-11 on the season after losing three games last week, including losses to Rochester, Elma and Hoquiam.
Up next: Ilwaco (0-11) will travel to take on Tenino on May 1, followed by a home game against Montesano on May 6.
Raymond/South Bend soccer
The Raymond/South Bend soccer team continues to impress, shutting out three teams last week, including Hoquiam, Chief Leschi and Tenino by a remarkable 41-0 margin, remaining undefeated on the season at 12-0-1.
The Ravens scored their highest goal output of the season in a 19-0 thrashing against Chief Leschi on April 23, then blanked Tenino 7-0 on April 25.
The Ravens (12-0-1), whose lone tie came against Elma in the first match of the season, has now won 12 straight games, including five straight shutouts. The Ravens have only allowed seven goals this season.
Despite the recent dominance, Raymond/South Bend fell on spot to #5 among 72 1A soccer teams across the state in the latest rankings.
