Ilwaco to open summer season Saturday

The first Saturday in May holds annual traditions for Ilwaco, including opening day for the Ilwaco Saturday Market, the Ilwaco Children’s Parade and the Ilwaco Charter Association’s annual Blessing of the Fleet.
The market opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 4 p.m. In addition to artists and vendors, the market hosts a Community Living Room at the Port of Ilwaco pavilion and a Neighborhood Backyard for games and activities. The Community Living Room is in its second year, a space for various local nonprofits, musicians and artists to utilize the space for performing, activities and community programs. The Ilwaco Timberland Library will be among those present on opening day. The market runs every Saturday until Sept. 27.
The Ilwaco Merchants Association’s Ilwaco Children’s Parade starts at noon and runs westbound along Howerton Way, starting near Coho Charters with the route ending downtown at First and Lake streets. A registration booth for entries will be set up in the parking lot by Coho Charters at 237 Howerton from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Not just for kids, the parade is open to all family friendly and nonpolitical entries. Held in conjunction with Loyalty Days weekend, the theme is patriotism. Awards for best bike, best float and most patriotic, among others, are given and there are also goody bags for kids.
A tradition for more than 46 years, the Ilwaco Charter Association’s Blessing of the Fleet is held at 2:30 p.m. Participants may join a participating charter boat. There is no fee, although space is limited and guests are welcome on a first-come, first-served basis. Other vessels are welcome to join the procession. The U.S. Coast Guard will drop a wreath from their helicopter while a prayer is said over the radio for local fishermen. Each boat brings flowers and drops those in the water.
