Game of the Week: Lady Fishermen snag sixth straight win 12-5

ILWACO — The Ilwaco softball baseball team ignited a nine-run outburst in the fourth inning to overcome a 5-0 deficit to beat Naselle 12-5 for their sixth straight win on Thursday, April 24, in Ilwaco.

After a scoreless first inning, Naselle (5-4) burst to 5-0 lead in the second inning, starting with an RBI double from Brooklyn Leggett(13), followed by a two-RBI triple by Avrey Ford(1) and RBI singles from Jessie Smith (11) and Emma Kragerud (9).
After a scoreless third inning, the Ilwaco offense awoke in the fourth on a two-out rally, beginning with a two-RBI single from Ana Petry (4), cutting into the Comet lead 5-2.
The Lady Fishermen then unloaded the bases with a three-RBI triple from Jayden Patana (5) to deep center, tying the game (5-5), before a bloop RBI-single from Megan Dille (14) gave Ilwaco their first lead of the game (6-5).
A two-RBI triple from Gracie Wirkkala (12) and RBI-singles from Petry (4) and October Graves (10) ensued as Ilwaco was able to bat around the order, culminating in a nine-run inning and a 9-5 lead. In the sixth inning, Ilwaco added a couple more insurance runs on an overthrown ball into the outfield, one of four Comet errors committed in the game, capping a 12-5 win for the Lady Fishermen.
Game notes: Naselle out-hit Ilwaco 12-6, but issued nine walks and allowed nine stolen bases. The Comets were led offensively by Avrey Ford (1), who finished with two hits and two RBIs. Ford pitched four innings in the loss, allowing nine runs on six hits, with six walks and four strikeouts. Ilwaco starting pitcher October Graves (10) pitched one inning, allowing five runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Ilwaco winning pitcher Emma Frame (37) threw two innings in relief, allowing just two hits and zero runs with four strikeouts.
Season notes: The Lady Fishermen (7-4-1) rose 10 spots to #15 in the WIAA state rankings among 47 2B teams across the state. The Comets (6-4) are currently #12 among 29 1B teams across the state.
Up next: Ilwaco (7-4-1) will host Wahkiakum on May 6, followed by an away game at Hoquiam on May 7. Naselle (6-4) will travel to take on Astoria on May 1, followed by a home game against Montesano on May 5.
