Annual free shredding event in Long Beach
LONG BEACH — Strand Insurance is again sponsoring its popular free shredding event on Saturday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to noon, or until the truck is full. The agency offers this service as a way to help protect community members from identity-theft risks associated with sensitive financial records. This is a perfect opportunity to dispose of outdated tax records, credit card statements and other documents that could reveal your personal data. Please bring only paper, with no binder cli[s and no plastic sleeves. There is free drop-off. The truck will be in the parking lot across from 205 Bolstad Ave. E, Suite #1. Master Gardeners hold plant clinics
SOUTH BEND — The Washington State University Master Gardeners of Pacific County will be hosting twice monthly plant/answer clinics from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, from April through September, at the WSU Extension Office, 1216 W. Robert Bush Drive in South Bend. The next clinic will be held on Monday, April 28. Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer home gardening questions about plants, soil, insects and other topics. Loyalty Days events set for May 3 and 4
LONG BEACH and ILWACO — Annual Loyalty Day Weekend events are planned for Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4. On May 3, it’s opening day for Ilwaco Saturday Market, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by the Ilwaco Children’s Parade at noon, and the Blessing of the Fleet at 2:30 p.m. hosted by the Ilwaco Charter Association. In downtown Long Beach on Sunday, May 4, the 75th Annual Loyalty Days Parade — a beloved tradition on the Long Beach Peninsula — begins with a thrilling Coast Guard helicopter flyover at 1 p.m. See more details in next week’s Chinook Observer and Coast Weekend.

‘Empowering Our Future’ planned May 7
KLIPSAN — A free seminar, “Empowering Our Future: Planned Giving for Sustainable Impact,” for nonprofit boards, nonprofit staff, and community members in rural communities is being hosted by Pacific Community Foundation on Wednesday, May 7, 1 to 4 p.m. at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center. Explore the power of planned giving Nonprofit leaders ― take away key steps to implement or invigorate a successful planned giving program to create a sustainable impact for your mission. Community members ― discover how you can leave a lasting legacy to support the causes you care about. This will be a dynamic program, with interactive discussions and actionable steps for both nonprofit leaders and community members. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity!

Registration underway for annual Hope Floats
LONG BEACH — Registration is underway for artists wishing to take part in the annual Hope Floats event that promotes mental health awareness and raises funds for the advocacy group Peace of Mind Pacific County. Artists should contact Nikki Fortuna at info@pompc.org for information and registration. Decorated floats will be displayed May 10 and 11 in downtown Long Beach with an online auction May 9-20.

22nd annual Long Beach Surf Perch Derby
LONG BEACH — The 22nd annual Long Beach Surf Perch Derby, sponsored by the Peninsula Lions Cub, will take place from the Bolstad Avenue Approach in Long Beach Saturday, May 10. Cash prizes will be awarded for top three individuals (winner $200) and teams (winner $300) and $50 for the heaviest fish. Registration is $40 on the day, $35 in advance, at SurfPerchDerby.net or email SurfPerchDerby@gmail.com. Registration runs 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Breakfast will be available for fishers. A hot-dog lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $10. The weigh-in will be 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the pavilion with awards announced.
Participants must have a Washington state fishing license.

Ilwaco Sports Boosters spring run
LONG BEACH — A 5K and 10K run are planned June 14 to raise funds through the Ilwaco Sports Boosters for Ilwaco schools’ cross country program. The runs will begin at the Bolstad beach approach and conclude with awards at 11:30 a.m. at Veterans Field. People who register by May 16 are guaranteed a T-shirt. Cost of $20.
