LONG BEACH — Law enforcement arrested a man after he allegedly broke into a motorhome located on the 1100 block of Washington Avenue in Long Beach. The incident unfolded at 1:56 p.m. on April 6.

A man called 911 after contacting a homeowner when he noticed signs that someone was inside the motorhome and learned no one was supposed to be there. The Long Beach Police Department and Pacific County Sheriff’s Office responded.

“[Deputy Cosmo Cozby] and I arrived and knocked and announced on the motorhome,” LBPD Officer Miranda Estrada stated in court documents. “There was no answer. I went around to the rear of the motorhome where there was a bicycle propped up against the house.”

“The back window of the motorhome was broken. I advised Deputy Cozby of my findings, and he opened the door to the motorhome and made entry. I stayed at the rear of the motorhome in case someone attempted to jump out of the window,” Estrada added.

Cozby reportedly located an individual inside the motorhome.

“I went to the front of the motorhome and entered,” Estrada stated. “Deputy Cozby was giving commands to the subject who was located in the bathroom of the motorhome.”

The man was identified as Jacob M. Stapleton, 28.

“Stapleton denied breaking the window and said that someone else did it,” Estrada stated. “Stapleton stated that he went into the motorhome to get out of the rain, and the other guy took off.”

Officers did not locate anyone else inside the motorhome. They sent images of the inside of the motorhome to the registered owner, who stated it had been “trashed” and that he wanted to “press charges.”

According to Stapleton, he had been staying inside the motorhome for approximately three days with another individual named “Johnston.”

Stapleton was arrested and booked into the Pacific County Jail for second-degree malicious mischief and first-degree vehicle prowl. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of first-degree trespassing.

He appeared in Pacific County Superior Court on April 7. Judge Donald J. Richter set his bail at $5,000 for the two felony charges. He is also being held on $2,500 bail for the misdemeanor count through the Long Beach Municipal Court.
