LONG BEACH — Saturday’s demonstration in downtown Long Beach started at the beach end of Boulevard Avenue and continued down Pacific Avenue.

The crowd marched along five blocks downtown and walked three or four across. There were young and old, newcomers and longtime residents, displaying an impressive variety of handmade signs in support of democracy.

Crowd sizes are difficult to estimate, but participants suggested up to 750 total.

The demonstration was part of nationwide protests centering an array of issues. These included Elon Musk’s DOGE attacks on federal employees, reproductive rights, worries about Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid, and lack of effective opposition to Trump policies by national Democrats.
