SOUTH BEND — The following case was among those handled during the March 21 Pacific County Superior Court criminal docket.
Scott D. Reeder, 57 — It has been just over a year since he was arrested along with one other individual after allegedly breaking into a shop on the outskirts of South Bend on Feb. 6, 2024. He faced one count of second-degree burglary.
According to court records, he had a change of plea and sentencing hearing scheduled three different times in 2024 before competency became an issue. He was ordered to undergo a competency evaluation on May 3.
The evaluation subsequently determined he was not competent and recommended he undergo restoration services. On July 12, after the restoration services were completed, he was deemed competent enough to stand trial.
The case trickled on through pretrial hearings, and on Oct. 29 the court issued another order for a competency evaluation. The evaluation determined that he was no longer competent enough to stand trial, and restoration services were again ordered.
According to court records, he was evaluated twice and restoration service was recommended an additional time. The last report determined that further action was unlikely to assist in him regaining competency.
“If the Court determines Mr. Reeder is not competent to process, I cannot conclude there is a substantial probability that his symptoms will improve with further competency restoration treatment such that he could restore to competency within a reasonable period of time,” Dr. Lyndsay Brooks stated in court records.
Pacific County Superior Court Judge Donald J. Richter signed an “Order Dismissing Felony Charges and Directing Civil Commitment Evaluation.”
