Liberty Theater hosts IHS musicians
ASTORIA — The Liberty Theater in Astoria will host a concert of student musicians from Ilwaco High School in their annual music night. The free event is 7 p.m. March 5 and will feature choir, jazz, concert, mariachi and the percussion ensemble performances. The theater’s Homegrown Series, created in 2016, consists of concerts by area high schools. Seating is general admission. Donations will be accepted at the door with all proceeds going to the IHS Music Department. Doors open at 6 p.m.
Pacific County History Forum looks at Fitzpatrick
ILWACO — For their March 5 gathering, the free Pacific County History Forum will meet in Ilwaco at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. The topic is the life and work of Charles Fitzpatrick, illustrated by photographs and drawings from the museum’s extensive Fitzpatrick collection. In addition to works documenting the years he lived on the peninsula (1920s-1950s), examples of Charley’s artwork depicting pioneer times will be available. Many of those drawings, such as his ubiquitous stagecoach, were drawn according to the descriptions given to him by old-timers who had been here “back in the day.”

OCEAN PARK and LONG BEACH — Depending on a safe level of a marine toxin, state shellfish managers may soon confirm the next set of razor clam digs on coastal beaches. Tentative dates during late afternoon/evening (noon to midnight only) low tides:

AAUW hearing from a retired nurse practitioner
LONG BEACH — Members of the American Association of University Women will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday March 8 at the Elks Lodge in Long Beach. The speaker will be Callie Wilson, a retired nurse practitioner from Olympia, who adopted an intellectually disabled girl from India. She will speak about services for people with developmental disabilities and how people can navigate the system to obtain the services they need.
Pacific Transit System announces changes
Starting in March, Pacific Transit System will no longer charge a fare for rides, it recently announced. Separately, the transit system announced it will stop service early on Sunday, March 9 for a company-wide meeting, and all buses will be out of service by 2 p.m. The Route 32 in Raymond, Route 20 in Long Beach and the Raymond and Tokeland Shopper Shuttles will be affected. Riders are asked to plan accordingly for the service disruption. Regular service will resume on Monday, March 10.
Peninsula Patriots presents ‘Am I Racist?’

Audition for ‘Into the Woods’
FORT COLUMBIA — Auditions have been announced for “Into the Woods,” the summer musical to be staged by the Peninsula Association of Performing Artists. They will be held 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 14, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. March 15 and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 17. Cast members of all ages are needed. The Stephen Sondheim musical is based on a blend of fairy stories by the Brothers Grimm. Performances will run five weekends, July 11 through Aug. 10.
Pacific County Historical Society annual meeting
NASELLE — The Annual Meeting of the Pacific County Historical Society will be at Appelo Archive Center in Naselle, 1056 State Route 4, on Sunday, March 16 from 1-3 p.m. It will be a great opportunity to sample some authentic Finnish pulla bread with great coffee, hear a terrific speaker, and visit Appelo Archives great display areas afterwards. This year’s guest speaker is John C. Hughes, chief oral historian for the Washington Office of the Secretary of State. He retired as editor and publisher of The Daily World in Aberdeen in 2008 after a 42-year career that saw him win awards for investigative reporting, historical features, editorials and columns. An alumnus of the University of Puget Sound and the University of Maryland, he is a trustee of the Washington State Historical Society and has contributed to several Northwest history books, including his latest, “Lightning Boldt: Judge George H. Boldt, and a Defining Moment in Tribal Sovereignty.” Appelo Archives Cafe will be open with refreshments from this authentically Finnish and Norwegian cafe! Maximum capacity is 50 and over half of the reserved seating is already filled, so be sure to RSVP if you’d like to attend what is sure to be a wonderful meeting. Register for Seafood Chowder Cookoff
OCEAN PARK — The Surfside Homeowners Association Community Relations Committee is holding a Seafood Chowder Cookoff at noon March 22 at the Oysterville Schoolhouse, 3322 School Road in Ocean Park. Entries are free with preregistration; a minimum of six quarts of chowder per entry needs to be at the schoolhouse by 11:45 a.m. March 22. Taste and vote, from noon to 2 p.m., costs $5 plus a nonperishable food item donation. The awards will follow at 2:15 p.m. The event also includes a raffle, baked goods for sale and music by Bruce Mihalek. All proceeds will go to the Ocean Park Food Bank. State treasurer is Rotary speaker
KLIPSAN — On March 25, Washington State Treasurer, Mike Pellicciotti, will be the guest speaker at the SW Pacific County Peninsula Rotary Club meeting. His presentation is titled State Finances and Long-Term Policy and will focus on work he is leading through his office to improve the financial outlook for state government, local municipalities across Washington, as well as working families and retirees in every corner of the state. The meeting will be at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center, 21603 O Lane, Klipsan Beach, beginning at 5:15 p.m.. Limited seating will be available. Ilwaco Sports Boosters spring run
LONG BEACH — A 5K and 10K run are planned June 14 to raise funds through the Ilwaco Sports Boosters for Ilwaco schools’ cross country program. The runs will begin at the Bolstad Beach approach and conclude with awards at 11:30 a.m. at Veterans Field. People who register by May 16 are guaranteed a T-shirt. Cost of $20. AlAnon meetings on Peninsula and Zoom
AlAnon Family Groups are open to any adult. The only requirement for membership is that there is a concern about problem drinking by a relative or friend.
