Letter: Staff layoff troubles citizen

I visited our Sheriff’s Department in Long Beach last week for some information I needed. I was helped by Jonathan Cole, who used to be working in the evidence room at the sheriff’s office in South Bend. He told me he only has about a week left with the sheriff’s office as he is being laid off.

My question is this, why was he not offered a position by the in coming jail administration? It is the Department of Corrections? He is trained already, knows his business and in my opinion, should have been offered this position. I am saddened the sheriff’s office could not keep him or been able to talk with the Department of Corrections to help him.

Our county commissioners did not think this jail transfer action through. The sheriff budget must be very tight and it disappoints me that promising people like Jonathan are let go.
