Sports Roundup: Area basketball teams begin district play

Naselle girls basketball
The Naselle girls basketball team closed out their regular-season with a 64-31 win over Ocosta last week, finishing 11-7 on the year and third place in league play while securing a spot in the upcoming double-elimination district playoffs against Wahkiakum on Feb. 13.
“Well, our first half was not the team that we usually are,” said head coach Marie Green following the win over Ocosta on Friday, Feb. 7, a game rescheduled due to weather delays. “I know that some of it is attributed to the snow and not being able to fully practice this week,” Green said.
“But coming out of halftime we came out on fire.”
Naselle outscored Ocosta 42-10 over the final two periods, ending in a convincing 64-21 win. Naselle sophomore Aubrey Katyryniuk finished with a game-high 27 points.
“To have 32 total team steals, and only 8 turnovers, was a great night,” Green said. “We adjusted our defense after halftime and Mylee and Brooke dominated. It was great to see the girls really rally and continue to push the ball up the court. Aubrey had some amazing passes to her teammates tonight and we really started moving the ball well.”
Up next: Naselle (11-7) will face Wahkiakum in the first round of districts at 6 p.m. Feb. 13 at Wahkiakum High School.
Naselle boys basketball
The Naselle boys basketball team will play their final regular-season game on Monday, Feb. 10, before beginning district play on Feb. 12.
In their final regular-season home game on Feb. 8, Naselle recognized the four seniors on their roster, including Jack Strange (4), Jacob Lindstrom (5), William Anderson (33) and Kevin Lopez (54).
The Comets (12-8) rose four spots to 22nd in the latest RPI rankings among 81 1B teams. Naselle will either finish second or third in the 1B Coastal League, depending on the results of their final regular season game.
Up next: Naselle (11-8) will wrap up their regular season with a home game against Ocosta on Feb. 10, then start district play against a team to be announced on Feb. 12.
Ilwaco boys basketball
In their regular season finale, the Ilwaco Fishermen basketball team played one of their most complete games of the year, outscoring the Raymond/South Bend Ravens each period led by a cast of underclassmen, culminating in a comfortable 72-39 win that secured a second-place league finish and first-round bye for the upcoming district playoffs.
Up next: Ilwaco (9-10) will face Toledo in the their first district playoff game on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Rochester High School.
Willapa Valley boys basketball
The Willapa Valley boys basketball team notched two more wins last week, stretching their win streak to an incredible 18 games as they head into their final regular season game against Oakville on Feb. 12, before starting starting district play later in the week.
The Vikings (18-2), who haven’t lost since their first two games of the season, have secured a first-place finish in the 1B Coastal League regardless of the outcome against Oakville, granting a bye through the preliminary rounds of the 1B playoffs.
Willapa Valley has been incredibly balanced offensively this season, led by junior guard Blane King (10), averaging 14 points per game; followed by senior guard Nathan Fluke (2), averaging 13 points per game and sophomore power forward Brody Aust (5), averaging 11 points per game.
Up next: Willapa Valley (18-2) will close out the regular season against Oakville on Feb. 12, before starting district playoffs.
Willapa Valley girls basketball
The Willapa Valley girls basketball team won both games last week, including beating Lake Quinault and Ocosta, improving to 11-8 overall as they head into their final regular season showdown against Taholah on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
Willapa Valley remained 22nd in the latest RPI rankings among 70 1B teams. The Vikings are currently in tied with Taholah in first place in league play at 6-2.
Up next: Willapa Valley (9-8) will travel to take on Taholah on Feb. 11, followed by the district tournament.
Pe Ell girls basketball
The Pe Ell girls basketball team scratched off two more wins last week, climbing to 18-0 on the season with one game remaining in the regular season.
Pe Ell remained 7th in the latest RPI rankings among 70 1B teams, while also retaining their first-place position in the 1B Columbia Valley League at 10-0, securing a first-place finish.
Up next: Pe Ell (18-0) will host Mary M. Knight in the first round of district playoff on Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. in Pe Ell.
Pe Ell boys basketball
The Pe Ell boys basketball team dropped their final regular-season games last week, including a 48-39 loss to Wahkiakum and a 64-50 loss to CAA, bringing their record to 9-11 overall on the season.
Pe Ell dropped fell one spot to 36th in the RPI among 80 1B teams, including third place in the 1B Columbia Valley League at 6-4.
Up next: Pe Ell (9-11) will begin district play Feb. 12 against a team to be announced.
Raymond/South Bend boys basketball
The Raymond/South Bend boys basketball team had their two-game win streak snapped in a 72-39 loss to Ilwaco to end the regular season, and a third-place finish in the 2B Pacific League at 5-3.
The Ravens then lost Mossyrock 70-55 in the first round of district play on Saturday, Feb. 8, sending Raymond/South Bend into a loser-out matchup on Feb. 14, against the loser of Toledo/Ilwaco (on Feb. 12).

The Raymond/South Bend girls basketball team finished second in the 2B Pacific League, earning a first-round bye in the district playoffs.
