Animal Shelter Report: Big sweet girl needs guidance to thrive

Published 10:23 am Thursday, February 6, 2025

We are seeking an experienced owner/foster to foster our beautiful Bernie, who is a 2-year-old mastiff and weighs 120 pounds. Bernie could really do with getting out of the shelter as matter of some urgency, which is why we are asking for a foster.

About Bernie:

This sweet girl is all heart and cuddles. Bernie adores playtime, especially tug-of-war and squeaky plush toys, but she’ll happily leave fetch to the other pups! An outdoor enthusiast at heart, Bernie dreams of a home with a fenced yard where she can explore and enjoy the fresh air. She’s also a smart cookie who already knows a number of commands.

Bernie enjoys hugs, pets and being close to her people. She’ll make a wonderful companion for someone who appreciates a snuggly dog. Bernie loves her bed and likes to have her toys around her. She has some resource-guarding behaviors around food and toys, so she needs an experienced person who understands how to manage this. For this reason, if there are kids in the home, they should be 12 years or older.

What you need to know about Bernie:

This affectionate girl is not only loving but also a quick study. Bernie’s eagerness to please makes training sessions a joy.

Given her strength, a consistent approach to walking is absolutely essential for Bernie. We’ve collaborated with a trainer to guide her, and she’s excelling! Her future foster will need to continue this routine to ensure she respects her size and continues to thrive. One of our generous volunteers has agreed to cover the cost of some sessions with our trainer to ensure her foster is clear about what approach to use with Bernie. Due to her size it is paramount this consistent approach is continued with Bernie; she’s a big, powerful dog who needs clear guidance and boundaries when walking.
