Allegedly writing a check with a deceased individual’s name and bank account has landed an Ocean Park woman in jail. The Pacific County Sheriff’s Office began investigating the incident on Jan. 7.

The North Beach Water District contacted the sheriff’s office after a payment of $547.47 on Dec. 26 was returned on Dec. 29 for insufficient funds because the issuing account had been closed.

According to court records, Deputy Justin Smith investigated the case and interviewed a teller at the water district. The teller reported that Daniell Stickney, 30, “walked the check in and that she lives across the street.”

“I had a burglary case assigned to me on [Dec. 10, 2024, on the 1200 Block of] 30th Street, Seaview, WA, and the [victim] who stated she had blank checks and identifying documents that belonged to her and her deceased husband stolen from her home, among other items,” Smith states in court records.

Smith learned from the bank teller that Stickney had walked in to pay a delinquent balance on her water account, which was at risk of being shut off.

Stickney was arrested on Jan. 9 and booked into the jail at 12:40 a.m. The Pacific County Prosecutor’s Office subsequently filed charges against her for identity theft, forgery, possession of stolen property, and third-degree theft.

According to court records, Stickney appeared for a preliminary hearing in Pacific County Superior Court on Jan. 9, and Judge Donald J. Richter set her bail at $5,000. She is scheduled to appear for an arraignment on Jan. 17.
