Vikings 1-2 at state volleyball: Willapa squad rallies to win second game

YAKIMA — Willapa Valley concluded the WIAA 1B state volleyball tournament with a 1-2 record.

The Vikings began against Darrington, an 18-5 team whose regular season games had only gone to five sets twice. The Loggers won in three sets, 25-10, 25-15 and 25-10.

Next for Willapa was Soap Lake, which had begun with tournament with a 3-0 win over Pe Ell followed by a five-set loss to Walla Walla Academy, which later earned the fourth-place trophy.

The Eagles won the first set 28-26, but the Vikings rallied to win the match 25-22, 25-18 and 25-19.

The squad’s season ended, however, with a loss to Liberty Christian. The Richland-based team won 25-21, 26-24 and 25-17 and advanced to place eighth.

The Vikings roster for state featured seniors Samatha Sheary and Alana Neva and a huge junior class, Bella Ruddell, Jill Hodel, Paisley Hurley, Lauren Matlock, Rilyn Channell, Julianna Lynch, Allison Borden, Eliza Barnum, Azrielle Neva and Claire Jones, as well as freshman Tylar Keeton.

The team is coached by Chelsea Kempton with assistants Nichole Page and Jayme Pearson.

For the record, the 1B champion school was No. 2 seed Wilbur-Creston-Keller, which beat top-ranked, seven-time champions Oakesdale 3-1.
