A block in the business section of downtown Raymond is closed due to concerns about a building’s safety.

RAYMOND — A one-block section of Duryea Street in Raymond remains blocked to all traffic, including pedestrians, due to concerns about a building’s structural integrity.

The City of Raymond closed the section on Oct. 18 after an engineer brought concerns to their attention.

The building stretches half a block between First and Second streets on Duryea Street in the city’s downtown core.

“The property on Duryea was showing potential structural issues with the awning and façade of the building,” said Tia Channell, Public Works administrative assistant and code enforcement officer.

“Due to the potential hazards, the city determined the street should be closed for safety measures while the owner had a structural analysis completed,” Channel added.

The building’s owners, William and Trish Bisbee, had the analysis completed on Oct. 30, and the city is awaiting the results.

“We have not yet received a copy of the results of that analysis as of this date but expect one back soon,” Channell said. “Depending on the engineer’s recommendation, we will work with the owner to remediate the potential issues in a timely manner so the street can safely be reopened.”

For now, the city has no additional downtown dilapidated or derelict building concerns and is dealing with properties and buildings as they arise.

“The city has a code enforcement officer position, new as of this year and [is] working on remedies for many nuisance properties within the city as they come up,” Channell said.

The building reportedly had a $150,000 roof installed in recent years. Pacific County records show that the Bisbees own over 100 polygons in the county, including many in Raymond with some also located in the downtown region.
