- Ilwaco junior running back Dylan Pelas (2) looks to turn the corner last Friday against Adna.
ILWACO — On a senior-night test between two league foes, Adna seemed to have all the answers. In the end, the Pirates rolled to their third straight win while handing the Fishermen their fourth straight loss 27-8 last Friday in Ilwaco.
Both teams started the game with turnovers, but the difference was Adna was able to capitalize on a short field.
On the opening series, Ilwaco junior linebacker Corbin Johnson (23) recovered an Adna fumble, giving the Fishermen the ball near midfield. Ilwaco, however, fumbled the ball right back on their first offensive play. Adna then marched to pay dirt on their next drive, capping it off with an 18-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Layden York (7) to senior Luke Mooney (2), giving the Pirates a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter.
Each teams again traded possessions before Adna extended their lead to 13-0 on a one-yard touchdown plunge by sophomore running back Beau Miller (22) early in the second quarter. The Pirates added their second touchdown of the quarter on a touchdown pass to senior Gavan Muller (1), extending their lead to 21-0.
With less than a minute before halftime, Ilwaco freshman linebacker Cody Kaino (32) intercepted Adna senior quarterback Hayden York (7), setting up the Fishermen in Pirate territory at the 35-yard-line for the first time in the game. After a couple of incomplete passes and a sack, Ilwaco went to the half still trailing 21-0.
Ilwaco senior band members and cheerleaders were recognized before the game along with the six Fishermen senior football players, including Wade Smith (21), Ben Davis (56), Rigo Gonzalez (60), Marcus Lynch (75), Carter Humphreys (81) and Robert Sanders (82), who served as captains for the coin toss.
The Fishermen fell from 21st to 25th in the latest 45-team WIAA 2B state rankings following the loss, their fourth straight.
Up next: Ilwaco (4-4) will travel to take on Raymond/South Bend (2-6) Thursday, Oct. 31.
