Sports Roundup: Comet’s Larson eclipses the competition

- The Naselle volleyball team evened their overall season record at .500 last week after sweeping Mary M. Knight (6-7) in straight sets, improving to 7-7 on the year.
Naselle cross country
Kenzie Larson ruled the day.
The Naselle eighth-grader won the Central meet at Onalaska Thursday, Oct.17, completing the 5,000-meter lakeside course in a personal best time of 22:52.85.
Fourth was freshman teammate Karsen Green. NHS junior Jaylee Bonk and sophomore Shaylee Suomela finished in the middle of the field of 20, helping the Naselle girls win the meet on team points ahead of Willapa Valley. Viking senior Kaitlyn Ganzel placed second, 21 seconds behind Larson.
For the Comet boys, sophomore Caesar Garcia finished fifth in 18:47.36, mere seconds behind the Morton-White Pass trio who swept the top places and won the meet; Wahkiakum senior Noah Sandhu was fourth.
Ilwaco cross country
At Thursday’s Jewell Jaunt, Ilwaco freshman Elsa Linquist ran a personal best 21:24.30 for third. Junior Nora Soule placed sixth. Senior Sammy Lloyd was the highest-placed Fisherman boy, finishing eighth. Freshman Blake Eisbrenner was 11th in the field of 44.
Next for both squads is the league meet at Ocosta on Thursday, Oct. 24, then the district meet, which determines state qualification, at Rainier Nov. 2.
Ilwaco football
The Ilwaco football team (4-3) suffered their third consecutive loss after falling to Napavine (5-2) 51-14 last Friday in a league clash in Napavine.
The Fishermen slipped to #21 in the latest 45-team WIAA 2B state rankings following the loss, their third straight after starting the season 4-0.
Up next: Ilwaco (4-3) will host Adna (4-3) Friday, Oct. 25.
Raymond/South Bend football
The Raymond/South Bend football team snapped their five-game losing streak by blasting East Jefferson (0-7) 42-12 in a non-league matchup last Friday.
The Ravens roared to a 28-6 halftime lead by rushing for a combined 307 yards, led by RSB senior quarterback Chris Quintana (4), who piled up 138 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries. Fellow Raven teammate Isaac Schlueter (15) added 114 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.
RSB junior Chris Banker (25) recorded a team-high five tackles on defense.
The Ravens (2-5), currently 0-3 in their division, are ranked 36th in the 45-team 2B WIAA state RPI rankings.
Up next: Raymond/South Bend will travel to take on Forks (2-5) in a division clash Friday, Oct. 25.
Pe Ell/Willapa Valley football
The Pe Ell/Willapa Valley football team continues to gain momentum, including rolling to their fourth straight win in convincing fashion in a 34-6 victory over Forks (2-5) last Friday.
After starting the season 1-2, the Titans (5-2) have won their last four games by a 157-54 margin, including only allowing 12 points combined over the past two weeks.
With the latest win, the Titans rose from 14th to 13th in the WIAA 2B state rankings among 45 teams and move to 3-0 in the division, tied with Napavine for first place and setting up a key division clash this Friday.
Up next: Pe Ell/Willapa Valley will next host Napavine (5-2) on Friday, Oct. 25.
Willapa Valley volleyball
The Willapa Valley volleyball team suffered their first back-to-back losses of the season last week, falling to 9-4 overall on the season after reeling off five straight wins.
The Vikings were highly competitive in both matches, including a five-set loss to Taholah (10-3) and a four-set loss to Ocosta (12-1).
Following the losses, Willapa Valley fell to 6-4 in division play and from seventh to 14th in the latest 80-team WIAA 1B volleyball state rankings.
Up next: Willapa Valley will travel to take on Raymond/South Bend (6-5) on Thursday, Oct. 24.
Naselle volleyball
The Naselle volleyball team evened their overall season record at .500 last week after sweeping Mary M. Knight (6-7) in straight sets, improving to 7-7 on the year.
The Comets remained 26th in the latest 80-team WIAA 1B state rankings while climbing into third place in the seven-team 1B Columbia Valley League, trailing Pe Ell and Columbia Adventist Academy.
Up next: Naselle will host Lake Quinault (2-10) on Thursday, Oct. 24.
Raymond/South Bend Volleyball
The Raymond/South Bend volleyball team (6-5) notched two straight set sweeps last week, including beating Chief Leschi (3-6) and Elma (5-8), earning their fifth win in six games.
The Ravens, currently 3-1 and second place in 2B Pacific League play, rose to 26th in the latest WIAA 2B state volleyball rankings following the wins.
Up next: Raymond/South Bend will host Ilwaco (1-9) on Monday, Oct. 28.
Ilwaco volleyball
The Ilwaco volleyball team (1-9) dropped two matches last week, including a narrow, five-set loss to Chief Leschi (3-6).
Following the loss, the Lady Fishermen fell to 50th in the 55-team WIAA 2B volleyball state rankings.

Ilwaco soccer
The Ilwaco girls soccer team lost to Toledo (7-6-1) 9-0 last week, falling to 0-9 overall on the season.
The Lady Fishermen, still seeking their first goal this season, fell to 45th in the latest 1B/2B WIAA state soccer rankings among 46 teams.
Up next: Ilwaco will travel to take on Onalaska (9-3-1) on Monday, Oct. 28.
Raymond/South Bend soccer
The Raymond/South Bend girls soccer team earned two wins last week, improving to 5-7 overall on the season.
The Ravens rose from 25th to 23rd in the latest WIAA 1B/2B state rankings among 45 teams following the wins.
