‘Standoff’ ends peacefully without arrest

NORTH COVE — No arrest was made following a standoff in North Cove on Sept. 19 after a man allegedly pointed a firearm at a neighbor. The incident began at 8:57 a.m. in the area of the 1000 block of Juniper Street.

An individual called 911, stating that their neighbor was sitting down and pointed a firearm in their direction. The caller also added that the individual had threatened others at some point and was a veteran with mental health issues who owns several firearms.

According to public records, law enforcement from the Pacific County Sheriff’s Office, Shoalwater Bay Police Department, Washington State Patrol, Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Washington State Parks responded to the scene.

Additional support from the Grays Harbor and Lewis County SWAT teams was requested but later canceled. The South Beach Fire Authority was also asked to stage in the area in case the incident escalated.

Details are scarce. The incident was put over the north county radio frequency, and all non-emergency traffic was held for some time. What is known thanks to public records:

• The first unit was on scene at 9:56 a.m.;

• An alleged suspect exited the residence at 10:29 a.m. with a rifle and was heard saying, “We are going to de-escalate, or they are going to catch a slug,” referring to a rifled shotgun round.

• Officers contained the residence belonging to the alleged suspect from 9:56 a.m. until the incident abruptly ended more than two hours later at 12:07 p.m.

• The Pacific County Emergency Management Agency sent a reverse 911 alert to 61 homes in the area at 10:41 a.m., informing residents to stay inside. The alert was lifted at 12:14 p.m.

• Video footage of the originating incident was provided to law enforcement at 11:58 a.m., potentially by the suspect, who had surveillance cameras all around the residence.

• Responders from South Beach Fire Authority were cleared at 12:13 p.m.

• The last unit cleared the scene at 3:17 p.m.

No arrest was made in connection with the incident, and all radio traffic over the north county frequency was reopened at 12:05 p.m. Public records did not disclose if units were attempting to contact the alleged suspect during the duration of the incident.
