Sports Roundup: Naselle, Ilwaco football improve to 2-0

Naselle football

The Naselle football team improved to 2-0 on the season after blowing out Wahkiakum (0-2) 72-6 in a league matchup last Friday in Wahkiakum.

The Comets raced to a 52-6 halftime lead, powered by senior quarterback Jacob Lindstrom (5), who accounted for five touchdowns.

Naselle junior Justin Moncy (20), senior Jack Strange (44), junior Scott Henington (13) and senior Caiden Burke (27) each scored touchdowns for the Comets. Lindstrom finished with a game-high 121 yards rushing while adding 33 yards through the air. Strange had a team-high seven tackles, followed by sophomore Kyle Pakenen (87) with four.

Up next: Naselle (2-0) will host Sound Christian (1-0) Friday, Sept. 20, in Naselle. Sound Christian beat Ocosta 44-0 to start their season.

Ilwaco football

The Ilwaco football team climbed to 2-0 on the season after running over the Winlock Cardinals (0-2) 58-12 last Friday in Winlock.

Fishermen junior fullback Corbin Johnson (23) had a monster game for Ilwaco, rushing for five touchdowns and 116 yards on 16 carries. Junior Dylan Pelas (2) delivered a game-high 156 yards and two touchdowns on just 11 carries, an average of more than 14 yards per carry. Ilwaco freshmen Brexten Weidner (15) and Cody Kaino (32) also tallied touchdowns as the Fishermen piled up more than 350 yards rushing against the Cardinals.

Up next: Ilwaco (2-0) will next host Wahkiakum (0-2) Friday, Sept 20.

Raymond/South Bend football

The Raymond/South Bend football team fell to 1-1 on the season after losing in a shootout with Rainier 43-34 last Friday in South Bend.

The Ravens (1-1) rushed for 387 yards, including a game-high 161 yards and one touchdown from senior quarterback Chris Quintana (4). Ravens junior Chris Banker (25) piled up 122 yards rushing and two touchdowns while senior Isaac Schlueter (15) added 112 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Raymond sophomore DB Manny Becerra-Souza recorded a game-high 19 tackles.

Up next: Raymond/South Bend (1-1) will travel to take on Hoquiam (0-2) in a non-league matchup Friday, Sept. 20. Hoquiam lost their first two games, including to Columbia (16-13) and King’s Way Christian (49-13).

Pe Ell/Willapa Valley football

The Pe Ell/Willapa Valley football team (1-1) lost to Onalaska (1-1) 34-8 in a non-league matchup last week.

Up next: Pe Ell/Willapa Valley (1-1) will host Toledo (2-0) Friday, Sept. 20.

Naselle volleyball

The Naselle volleyball team (2-1) split their last two games, including losing to the Taholah Chitwins (3-0) in a non-league match Tuesday, Sept. 10, before sweeping Wishkah Valley (1-2) in straight sets on Monday, Sept. 16.

Up next: Naselle (2-1) will travel to take on Mary M. Knight on Thursday, Sept. 19.

Willapa Valley volleyball

The Willapa Valley volleyball team climbed to 3-0 on the season after sweeping Wishkah Valley and Lake Quinault in straight sets last week. The Vikings have won 9 of 11 sets so far this season, and are in first place in the 1B Coastal League.

Up next: Willapa Valley (3-0) will host Taholah (3-0) in a clash of unbeatens Thursday, Sept. 19.

Ilwaco soccer

A short-handed Ilwaco girls soccer team (0-1) lost their season-opening match 7-0 to Kalama (2-1) on Saturday, Sept. 14. Ilwaco, under first-year coach Cindy Guzman, will compete in the 10-team 2B Central League.

Up next: Ilwaco (0-1) will travel to take on Ocosta (2-0) on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
