ILWACO — The Lady Fishermen volleyball team netted their first win of the season after beating the Clallam Bay Bruins in four sets last Thursday in Ilwaco.

Ilwaco (1-2) took the first set (25-22) then lost the second (21-25) before bouncing back to easily win the next two (25-2, 25-7) over Clallam Bay (0-2) to earn their first win of the season on their home court.

Cunningham, Morris help lead

The Bruins raced to a lead in the first set before senior OH Mya Cunningham (9) and junior LB Emily Morris (2) each delivered back-to-back aces, tying the game at 15-15.

Lady Fishermen senior DS Keowa Rodriguez Iyall (5) gave Ilwaco their first lead (18-16) before 5-foot-11 junior Madison Key (10) spiked the final point to give Ilwaco the set.

In the second set, Ilwaco built a 10-0 lead behind five aces from Cunningham. The Bruins battled back, however, taking their first lead (21-19) late before stealing the set (25-21).

In the third set, superior serving from Cunningham and sophomore Jayden Patana (1) again allowed Ilwaco to build a significant lead (17-1). This time, however, Ilwaco was able to finish off the Bruins with Morris providing the final point (25-2).

Clallam Bay took an early 3-0 lead in the fourth set before Ilwaco responded with 10 straight points, with Patana and Morris doing the most damage, taking a 15-5 lead. Morris served four straight aces to finish the match (25-7).

Young team

A youthful Ilwaco roster includes 10 players under first-year head coach Molly Bond and assistant coach Kristina Salas, including two seniors, four juniors, three sophomores and one freshman. The 2024 Lady Fishermen volleyball roster includes:
