Pacific County’s first dahlia show was in 1924 in combination with that year’s Cranberrian Fair.

ILWACO — The WSU Master Gardeners of Pacific County will be at the annual Dahlia Show sponsored by the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum, 115 SW Lake St., on Friday, Sept. 13 and Saturday, Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The master gardeners will be in the café room inside the museum and will be happy to answer your dahlia questions or any other landscape-related questions, concerns and suggestions.

The Dahlia Show is part contest, part show and will highlight dahlias, which have long been a bloom of choice among local gardeners. Registration for the event is open now. For more information, see page 19 in today’s edition of Coast Weekend or go to columbiapacificheritagemuseum.org/events.

Answers will be provided on topics including:

• What types of viruses and insects are dahlias prone to?

• Do I have to dig up my dahlia bulbs in the fall and store them?

• My Asian pear tree did not have many Asian pears this year. Why?

• What tomatoes do best in our marine climate?

• How can I best keep my raised beds ready for spring planting?

• When is a good time to plant vegetable seeds and transplants?

The gardeners will also have handouts and other information about watering home gardens and landscape plants, as well as winterizing your yard.
