Letter: Tax on Social Security must end

Until 1985 Social Security income was not taxed. Then in 1984 the Democrats controlled the Congress and the Democratic Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill sent a bill to the president which would tax seniors’ Social Security income. In February 1985, then-President Reagan signed the bill into law.
The bill was set to end in 1988, but as we now know once the feds get a hold of your money, they never let go. Currently, seniors must pay taxes on Social Security anywhere from 25% up to 85 % of your yearly income.
Seniors are struggling to pay for these record high prices for groceries and medicine and gasoline and it is absurd that they should be forced to pay taxes on Social Security. By the way, we already were taxed on that Social Security when we worked.
I wrote to Sen. Patty Murray to ask her to put forward a bill to stop taxing our Social Security income and sorry to say she never took the time to respond to me. Not a peep!
I suggest to every person receiving Social Security, and to those of you who will someday hopefully receive your hard earned Social Security, that you get busy and contact your federal representatives and ask them to stop taxing Social Security income.
