Letter: Court proposal a step in the right direction

On Monday, July 29, President Biden unveiled three proposals aimed at reforming the U.S. Supreme Court to combat what he called the “increasing threats to America’s democratic institutions” aimed at restoring “trust and accountability to the court and our democracy.”

In one of the proposals, the president calls for term limits on our Supreme Court justices.
His concern is something that most Americans have been asking for many years: term limitations on all politicians, not just Supreme Court members and presidents. We have had term limitations on presidents for over 75 years; why not extend that restriction to every member of the political structure?
Too many of the “Old Timers” in our political system are not just a part of it; they are clogging up the arteries of progress because they possess the power (longevity) to do so. Doesn’t this qualify as a threat to America’s democratic institutions? Wouldn’t term limitation restore trust and accountability to our democracy?

There are 435 seats in the House of Representatives. Eight-one have been in office for 16 to as many as 43 years.
There are 100 Senate seats. Twenty-eight have been in office for 18 or more years (up to 53 years). My source for this information is govtrack.us.
According to an NBC report, seven “big issues” are at stake in the 2024 elections: Abortion, immigration, healthcare and prescription drugs, taxes, judges and the Supreme Court, trade, foreign policy and NATO. These are the ones politicians want to talk about. I think term limitations should be added to the list.
Although President Biden’s proposal is a step in the right direction, it does not go far enough.
