Elks offering fishing trip for dozen veterans

The Long Beach Elks Lodge is offering a fishing trip for 12 veterans.

The trip will be financed from a grant obtained by longtime lodge member Natalie Hanson.

It is scheduled for Aug. 15 with Coho Charters in Ilwaco. Those fishing will be responsible for their own lunch and beverages and must have a Washington state fishing license and catch record. They can be purchased on the morning of the trip at Coho Charters.

While the license rules may appear complex at first, the process is actually quite straightforward, said Ron Robbins, Elks veterans committee leader. If the veteran is disabled and a resident of Washington, he or she simply needs to purchase the annual Combination Fishing/Shellfish license for $11.35. The catch record card is free, making the entire process hassle-free, he noted.

On Aug. 14, the day before the trip, there will be a lunch at noon at the Elks for those going on the trip. This event is to answer any last-minute questions, provide information on timetables, get acquainted, and ensure that any physical assistance that may be required is addressed. “We have volunteers to help anyone who needs assistance,” Robbins said.
