OYSTERVILLE — Celtic harper Kathleen Staub and her mandolin-playing son Colin are familiar participants at Oysterville’s traditional Summer Vesper services.
The Staub family (which also includes son Sean and dad Paul) have divided their time between Oysterville and Portland for many years, and Kathleen and Colin are familiar to audiences in both venues. In Portland, they play individually, together and with other musicians while Paul and Sean are their ardent supporters. Their performance Sunday will include numerous Celtic tunes, “mostly Irish and Scottish,” says Colin.
Sunday’s Vespers Service will get underway at 3 p.m. Sunday with a five-minute “Oysterville Moment” by local storyteller Sydney Stevens. Pastor Steve Kovach will then greet the congregation, give a short meditation piece on mindfulness, and lead the congregation in singing a familiar hymn accompanied by Ferrell Hornsby on the historic pump organ. During that time, a collection basket will be passed with the monies to be used by the Oysterville Restoration Foundation toward the daily upkeep and maintenance of the church, which is open to the public daily throughout the year.
The remaining 45 minutes of the service will be devoted to the music of Kathleen and Colin. All are invited “to come as you are” and to enjoy this free 46-year tradition of Summer Music Vespers in the National Historic District of Oysterville.
