- A Station Cape Disappointment 47-foot motor lifeboat was among the Coast Guard assets deployed July 13 in a fruitless search for a missing man and boy in the vicinity of the mouth of the Columbia River. The search was suspended at 9 p.m. Saturday about 10 hours after a recreational fishing boat capsized.
ILWACO — One person drowned and two others are presumed deceased after a 26-foot recreational fishing vessel capsized Saturday morning near the Columbia River bar.
At 10:50 a.m., the Coast Guard contacted 911 Dispatch to report bringing two of five passengers from an accident to shore for emergency medical transport. A third person was floating face down for 20 minutes and the Coast Guard said CPR was in progress.
“Three were recovered and taken to the hospital, and unfortunately, one of them was pronounced deceased at the hospital,” Petty Officer Briana Carter said.
Helicopter and motor lifeboat rescue crews conducted an extensive search until nightfall for a missing 54-year-old man and an 11-year-old boy. The effort was suspended at about 9 p.m.
Two Pacific Salmon Charter fleet boats — The Marr B III and Westwind — were in the area and were able to pull the two survivors from the water. Ilwaco-based charters have a long record of such good Samaritan efforts.
Saturday’s accident happened at the time of maximum ebb tide, when the out-flowing Columbia River collides with the Pacific Ocean, creating notoriously dangerous surface conditions.
At the time of this report, no additional information was available about the identities of the boat’s passengers.
