Lower Columbia All-Stars take regional tournament

LOWER COLUMBIA — A local youth baseball team captured a tournament championship by winning four straight games last weekend.
The 10-and-under Lower Columbia All-Star Team defeated Winlock (11-4) and Gresham (13-10) in the opening rounds, then beat Newberg (15-0) in the semifinals and West Linn (9-3) in the title game to capture the Erik Wolfe Memorial Tournament, held last weekend in West Linn.
The team will next compete in statewide tournament, with opening-round games against Portland (Thursday, July 11, at 8 a.m.) and West Linn (Thursday, July 11, at 10:30 a.m.) followed by Lakeridge (Friday, July 12, at 8 a.m.) and Sandy (Saturday, July 13, at 6 p.m.).
“This is our first four games of pool play,” said assistant coach Mooch Smith.
“If we finish in the top two, we move to bracket play on Sunday.”
