Time Out for Faith: Who or what do you worship?

Published 1:12 pm Monday, June 24, 2024

Regardless of what country, race, or time we are born into, we humans have more in common then we have in differences. We humans all seek answers to the same questions: Who am I, where did I come from, what is my purpose here on earth and is this earthly existence all there is to ‘life’?

We humans did not create ourselves. We are created by an everywhere present at the same time sovereign personal God, all powerful and all knowing. Yes, our parents had a part in our creation, but we each are God’s idea. It’s God who creates life and brings us into this world. God says to Jeremiah: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you (Jeremiah 1:4).” Everyone is created by God and for God, for He has come to us in human form in Jesus Christ. He alone is worthy of our worship.

Worship is what we believe deep in our souls spiritually. Real worship is illustrated by how we spend our time and money. Time and money are not as much “ours” as they are blessings from the Almighty.

Why worship? Because we humans are created all with a soul.

Built into our souls and DNA by God is the need to worship. All humans worship. The question is not do we worship. The question is: who or what do we worship? Worship is so much more than something we do on Sunday or Saturday.

Here’s is where the rub comes. Initially we don’t like anyone telling us what to do, even if that one is God. Only God is God and we are not. Our creator is clear — “You shall have no other gods before me (Exodus 20:3).” If not careful, our hearts and minds can become idol factories for all kinds of wan-na-be gods. “Small g” gods like: money, politics, Hollywood, Wall Street, education, the military, sports, fashion, and out door recreation all compete for our attention and worship.

Worship is who or what we hold in reverence, that makes up our worldview and gives us meaning, purpose and value. Worship is not as much what we do on Saturdays, or Sundays. It’s our life style. Worship is what we believe deep in our souls spiritually. Real worship is illustrated by how we spend our time and money. Time and money are not as much “ours” as they are blessings from the Almighty.

So enjoy your days however you understand worship. Know that you can be and do more with God revealed in Jesus Christ, then you can by yourself. Til next time.
