Time Out for Faith: How you drive reflects on how you live

The vehicles we drive, where we drive, when we drive during day or night, and what weather conditions we have driven in have all given us positive and negative memories.

Do you drive like you live?

Consider the rule of law. Some drivers think the law applies to everyone except themselves. Aggressive, abusive, and selfish drivers, drive as they wish until they are caught disobeying the law or kill themselves or others. Probably the most unsettling experience I’ve had recently was when three motorcyclists passed me driving in between me and the driver in the lane next to me on the I-5 freeway. I understand it’s legal to do this in California, but not our state. Do you drive like you live?

Another example is how people stop at stop signs. To stop means one comes to a complete stop. Yet the temptation is to do a ‘California Stop,’ where one slows down but doesn’t completely stop. One drifts through the stop sign as traffic allows. This skirting the law then maybe is seen in one sorta cheating on doing his or her taxes or when alone checks out early from work.

Another example of driving is the tailgater. The driver who comes up on your tail almost kissing your back bumper. You are doing the speed limit; yet this person wants you out of his or her way. What counts is this driver getting his or her own way, regardless of possible hurt caused.

Another example is yielding the right of way. This driving skill prevents accidents. Yielding is seen by some as being weak; yet yielding the right of way is plain smart and may save you a lot of money.

Living is like driving; or as Jesus Christ repeatedly said, “Do to others as you would have them do to you. (Luke 6:31)” It’s called the Golden Rule.

So stay safe and respectful; driving the same respectful way you live. Til next time.
