Sports Roundup: Lady Fishermen outlast Comets in softball shootout, Ravens upset Tigers in district opener

Ilwaco softball
The Ilwaco girls softball team wrapped up their regular season with a 21-11 shootout victory over Naselle on Friday, then jump-started 2B district play with a 2-0 shutout over Rainier on Monday, May 13, advancing the Lady Fishermen to the second round against Forks (14-4) on Wednesday, May 15, in Centralia. The Lady Fishermen are among eight teams remaining in contention in a highly competitive 2B District 4 field as they move into the double-elimination round.
Season-finale shootoutIn the game against Naselle, the Lady Fishermen allowed 19 hits but capitalized on eight Comet errors, allowing for two big innings where they cashed in with 14 runs. Ilwaco was led by senior Kaitlyn Banuet, who had a game-high four hits. Lady Fishermen pitchers Toby Graves and Emma Grace combined four strikeouts while allowing 11 runs through five innings of work.
Ilwaco is currently ranked 22nd in the latest WIAA 2B state rankings among 47 teams.
Up next: Ilwaco (9-9) will travel to take on Forks (14-4) in the second round of districts at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, at Borst Park in Centralia.
Ilwaco baseball
After a 7-0 second round shutout victory over Toledo in the 2B district playoffs last week, the Fishermen fell to top-ranked Toutle Lake 7-1, then beat Forks 9-2 before losing to Napavine 9-6, finishing fourth in districts and qualifying for the upcoming WIAA 2B state tournament.
The Fishermen (19-5) qualified as the No. 9 seed in the 12-team field, the third straight year Ilwaco has made it to the state tournament.
Ilwaco, currently ranked 11th in the latest WIAA 2B state rankings among 48 teams, will have a tough task however in their loser-out game against No. 8 Cle Elum-Roslyn (19-5), currently ranked seventh in the state rankings. The winner of the opening-round matchup will advance to face No. 1 Toutle Lake (22-2) on Saturday, May 18, in Castle Rock.
Up next: Ilwaco (19-5) will begin state tournament play in a loser-out matchup Tuesday, May 14, against Cle Elum-Roslyn at Rotary Park in Ellensburg.
Naselle softball
The Naselle softball team continues to hover around the .500 mark after splitting their most recent games, including a 21-11 loss to Ilwaco and a 21-2 victory over Taholah, on Monday, May 13.
In the game against Taholah, Addie Dalton had a team-high four hits in helping the Comets to a 13-run first-inning outburst that ended in a 21-2 three-inning mercy-rule victory. Comet pitchers Mallory Helvey and Baylee Lopez combined for four strikeouts over three innings.
Up next: Naselle (8-10) will await seeding for the upcoming 1B District 4 softball tournament.
Raymond/South Bend softball
The Raymond/South Bend softball team (9-6) opened district play by upsetting Napavine (14-5) 12-3 in a loser-out matchup Monday, May 13, in Montesano.
With the win, the Ravens advance to face Adna in the 2B District 4 double-elimination round at 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 15, at Borst Park in Centralia.
Up next: Raymond/South Bend (9-6) will face Adna (15-4) in the double-elimination round at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, at Borst Park in Centralia.
Pe Ell/Willapa Valley baseball
The Pe Ell/Willapa Valley baseball team had their season come to an end after losing to Toledo 9-0 in the 2B district playoffs last week.
The Titans finished the season 16-6 and ranked 13th in the most recent WIAA 2B state rankings among 48 teams.
