1B baseball: Anderson, Helvey lead Comets to district championship

NASELLE — The Naselle baseball team (15-3) continued their march back to the WIAA 1B state tournament after winning the District 4 championship by smacking Oakville 9-1 then dispatching rival Mossyrock 11-0 last week, improving to 15-3 as they prepare to defend their state championship for the third straight season.

Anderson overpowers Acorns

The Comets kicked off their postseason with a 9-1 opening round victory over the visiting Oakville Acorns on May 7 in Naselle, led by a dominant performance from starting pitcher William Anderson. Anderson struck out 12 batters while only allowing two hits and one run.

The Naselle offense pounded the Oakville starting pitcher for 10 hits, led by Leith Chadwick and Jack Strange with three each.

Perfect game

In the district championship against Mossyrock, Naselle senior ace Dean Helvey delivered a perfect game, going five innings, striking out nine batters while allowing zero hits, zero runs and no walks in an 11-0 five-inning mercy rule victory over the rival Vikings on Thursday, May 9. William Anderson delivered a game-high four RBIs.

The Comets are currently fifth in the WIAA 1B state rankings among 41 teams.

Up next: Naselle (15-3) will face the winner of Pomeroy vs Orcas Island in a loser-out matchup on Saturday, May 18, at 1 p.m. at South Bend High School.
