Track athletes travel for tests: Crunch time as post-second meets loom

Freshman Andy Rosas of Naselle, who went to state in triple jump last year, was third at a Freshmen Invitational meet in Centralia Saturday, leaping 35.5 feet, just one inch behind the winner.

As well as going head-to-head at the earlier Ilwaco meet, Fishermen and Comet track squads hit the road for further tests at the weekend.

Friday, at the Spudder Track and Field Classic in Ridgefield, Naselle’s Jacob Pakenen jumped 11 feet for seventh in the pole vault; the winner cleared 14 feet. Teammate Derek Suomela ran the 400 and 800 meters, but did not place.

Raymond’s Austin Snodgrass won the shot put with a throw of 47-1 and was fourth in the 100. South Bend’s Robby Stigall improved his PR to 155-1 in winning the discus, with Snodgrass second at 147-4.

Saturday, at the Freshmen Invitational in Centralia, Comet athletes competed against opposition from bigger regional schools. Andy Rosas was third in triple jump with a distance of 35-5, one inch behind the winner. Logan Wirkkala-Scheller enhanced his PR in the javelin to 96-7, finishing seventh in a field of 54. Caesar Garcia improved his PR in the 1,600 to 5:34.55, but did not place. And Sophia Colombo placed fifth in the 400.

Ilwaco athletes posted some good scores and times at a meet in Jewell on Saturday.

Junior Mya Cunningham won the 1,600 in 6:11.87, a PR, and was second in the 800 with a time of 2:53.31.

Ilwaco sophomores went 1, 2 and 4 in the javelin with Hayzel Sager throwing 72-2 to win, ahead of Sophia Bailey with Madison Key fourth.

Senior Abbiegail Williams was second in the 3,200 and fifth in the 100 with a PR of 15.59 seconds, just ahead of teammate Key, who was was sixth in the 200.

Sophomore Juliet Perez was third in shot put with a PR of 25-8 and third in discus with 60-5.

Sophomore Cody Miller won the 1,600 with a PR of 5:15.30. Freshman Druv Athmanathan won the high jump, clearing 4-7. Junior Wade Smith placed second in pole vault and third in the 100, with senior Zach Jewell fourth, and third in the 200.

Senior Jacob Mathison placed second in the 800 and third in the 400. Junior Caleb Brundage placed second in javelin with 114-11. Classmate Skyler Saltzman was second in discus with 106-10 and Gage Thorne third in shot put with 35-5. In the 300-meter hurdles, senior Moises Mendez Hernandez placed second.

Next for Naselle is a District 4 1B home meet Wednesday; Ilwaco has 2B sub-districts in Raymond Friday.
