June Miller, left, has been impressing her track coaches at Naselle all season. Susan (Swanson) Burkhalter, who set the middle school 200m record in 1978, presented her with a memento to mark her success.

NASELLE — Jimmy Carter was president when Susan Swanson set the Naselle Middle School 200 meters record in 1978.

Her time of 28.6 seconds stood uncontested over 46 years — and seven presidencies — until speedy June Miller came along.

The eighth grader has been impressing her coaches all season, participating in multiple events including the 100, 200, high jump and triple jump.

In mid-April on her home track, the meet scorekeepers noted her winning time in the 200 was 27.7 seconds.

Miller’s pace was so fast that three of the four other runners from North Beach and Taholah posted personal records.

The achievement so delighted the Naselle community that Susan Swanson (now Burkhalter) came down to the school and presented Miller with a “golden record.”

The milestone was marked on Coach Marie Green’s Facebook page and greeted with applause from neighbors. “Great job to you both!” posted Jordan Givens. “That’s a long time to hold a record.”

Just to be complete, Miller won the high jump at the same meet, extending her personal best by clearing the bar at 5 feet for the first time, and also the triple jump, with a PR of 33-6.
