MS Track and Field: Burkhalter, Miller break 100-meter records

ILWACO — A few school records fell in a track and field meet last week, led by a couple streaking Comets.

Five schools, Ilwaco, Naselle, Raymond, North Beach and Oakville, participated in a middle school track and field meet last Wednesday, April 10 in Ilwaco, featuring athletes in sixth, seventh and eighth grades.

Among the strongest performances were the Ilwaco eighth grade boys, who finished first overall in their respective age group, scoring 103 points among 15 events. North Beach finished second (70), followed by Naselle (58) and Raymond (29).

The Naselle eighth grade girls were equally impressive, finishing first overall in their group, scoring 107 points among 15 events. North Beach finished second (79), followed by Ilwaco (54) and Raymond (36). The Naselle seventh grade girls were also first with 73 points, narrowly beating second-place North Beach (69).

Burkhalter wins fourAmong the notable individual results was Naselle eighth-grade speedster Gus Burkhalter, who set a personal record and finished first in the boys’ 100-meter sprint in a blazing 12.15 seconds, the fastest time in 15 years for the Comets. The 100-meter time tops the previous Naselle eighth-grade team record of 12.24 seconds by Kai Leach, set in 2009, and is currently the second-fastest in the state for his age group this season, only trailing Onalaska eighth grader Brodey Ariana (11.98 seconds).

Burkhalter also took first place in the 200-meter (26.06), high jump (5-4) and triple jump (36-4.5) to finish with 32 total points.

Naselle eighth grader June Miller won first place in the girls’ 100-meter with a time of 13.74 seconds, a personal record and topping the previous team record set by Echo Censi (14.28) in 2018. Miller also won the 200-meter with a time of 28.86 seconds, a personal record and the fastest team record since Echo Censi (30.34) in 2018.

Ilwaco eighth grader Elsa Linquist finished first in the girls’ 800 (2:58.21) and 1,600-meter (6:08.95).

A trio of Ilwaco boys swept the eighth grade 400-meter race, with Connor Ryden (1:02.56) finishing first, followed by Christopher Arnett (1:07.44) and Thendrix Besin (1:10.67). Ryden also finished first in the eighth grade boys’ 800-meter (2:35.43), finishing with 22 total points.

Naselle’s Bowen Burkhalter was first in the seventh grade boys’ 800 (2:55.11) and 1,600-meter (5:54.29), setting a personal record.

In the field events, Raymond eighth grader Monty Porter threw the 4 kilogram shot put 33-7, almost two feet further than the closest competitor. Porter also won first place in the discus (99-4), followed by Naselle eighth grader Larry Malchow (94-3.5). Porter (110 feet) and Malchow (100-9) finished second and third respectively in the javelin, won by Parker Johnson of North Beach (113-9).

Naselle eighth grader Klara Davis won the girls’ shot put (28-6) and discus (58- 9.5).
