Sports Roundup: Fishermen, Comets and Titans rise in state rankings

The Ilwaco baseball team (8-1) won their third straight game after sweeping visiting Ocosta by a 33-2 margin in a doubleheader last Tuesday, April 9, at Tinker Field in Long Beach.

Ocosta (4-1) entered the game undefeated before the Fishermen rocked the Wildcat pitchers for four first-inning runs before adding 12 more in the second, ending in a 16-0 three-inning mercy rule win. The senior trio of Derrick Cutting, Boston Caron and Cannon Johnson did most of the damage offensively, combining for six of the team’s nine hits and eight RBIs, including home runs by Caron and Johnson. Senior pitcher Jacob Rogers pitched three spotless innings in the win.

In the second game, Ilwaco unleashed 19 hits in a 17-2 four-inning rout. Caron, Derrick Cutting and Keaton Fisher led the offensive attack with three hits each. Caron drove in a game-high four RBIs, including his second home run of the day. Ilwaco seniors Kaemon Sawa and Kyle Morris pitched a combined four innings in the win, striking out seven batters total.

Ilwaco, currently 5-0 in 2B Pacific League play, remains in second place behind first-place Forks (6-0 Pacific League, 8-2 overall). The Fishermen (8-1 overall) are ranked seventh in the WIAA 2B state rankings.

Cutting, a senior, has a remarkable .720 batting average on the season, including a team-high 18 hits through nine games. He has also stolen a team-high 17 bases.

Up next: Ilwaco will next host Toledo (4-4) in a non-league matchup on Saturday, April 20.

Ilwaco softballThe Ilwaco girls softball team won their third consecutive game after beating Mossyrock and Taholah, climbing to 4-2 overall on the season.

The Lady Fishermen beat Mossyrock 4-3 in a come-from-behind victory on Friday, April 12.

Ilwaco freshman Mikaila Warfield drove in the winning run with a two-run triple in the seventh inning.

“The girls overcame adversity and pulled out the win,” said head coach A.J. Smith.

“I am so proud of them. The only thing that came to mind after that game was the line from Christmas Vacation — ‘Holy moly, where is the Tylenol?’”

Up next: Ilwaco will travel to take on Wahkiakum on Saturday, April 20.

Naselle baseballThe Naselle baseball team split their league games last week, including 1-0 loss to Mossyrock and a 14-0 shutout win over Lake Quinault, bringing their overall record to 6-2.

The Comets are ranked sixth in the WIAA 1B state rankings.
