SOUTH BEND — No break, but Naselle athletes had a spring in their step last week.
Some familiar Comet names were high in the scoring lists at the Henrie-Weisel Meet in South Bend Thursday, April 4.
And for Caesar Garcia it was a stellar afternoon. The freshman won both the races in the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters. He also placed second in the 300 meter hurdles.
Two senior boys earned podium places. Derek Suomela won the 800 and long jump (with a personal best leap of 20-0.5) and placed third in high jump. Jacob Pakenen won the 400, was fourth in the 200, third in discus and fourth in long jump.
Girls’ successes were highlighted by freshman Aubrey Katyryniuk, who won the 800 in a personal best time of 3:02.70.
Freshman Sophia Colombo placed second in both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles races. Karsen Green, an eighth-grader, placed second in the triple jump, third in the 3,200 and fourth in the 1,600. Sophomore Jessica Underhill was fourth in the discus.
The meet was dominated by the north county schools, with Raymond topping the boys team scores, powered by three event wins in the 100, 200 and shot put (plus third in discus) by senior Austin Snodgrass, followed by South Bend and Willapa Valley.
For the girls, South Bend came out ahead of Valley and Raymond. Valley senior Emily Wilson won the 100, 200 and 400 and was second in javelin.
Ilwaco track athletes had the week off, but return to action in Raymond this Thursday. Naselle also competes at Raymond and has a meet at St. Helens, Ore., Saturday, on its schedule.
• In other track news, the WIAA’s governing body has voted to continue having Eisenhower High School in Yakima host the state track meet for the next four years. The meet was moved from long-time host Eastern Washington University in Cheney last year.
