Naselle track seniors earn their applause: Three wins for Suomela; Comets ace pole vault

- Pouring rain didn’t deter Naselle athletes at their home meet Thursday, the final home meet for four seniors. One, Desirae Gifford, won the pole vault with freshman teammate Shaylee Suomela second and another senior, Maggie Creech Ware, third.
NASELLE — Senior night Thursday honored four Comet track stalwarts: Derek Suomela, Jacob Pakenen, Desirae Gifford, and Maggie Creech Ware.
Three celebrated event wins at their last home meet against Ilwaco, Elma, Toledo, Ocosta and Mary M. Knight.
Suomela won the 800 meters with a time of 2:11.35, high jump with a clearance of 5-8 and long jump with a leap of 19-3. Pakenen won the pole vault with a clearance of 10-6 and was third in long jump. Gifford won the pole vault, with a personal best of 6-6.
Eighth-grader June Miller made headlines, too, with wins in the 100 meters (14.09 seconds) and high jump (4-6), both personal bests, and third in triple jump.
Another eighth-grader, Halle Miller, won the 100-meter hurdles, was third in the high jump and fourth in the 100 meters.
Sophomore Mylee Dunagan won the triple jump with a distance of 31-10, was second in high jump and third in both the 100 and 200 meters. Freshman Brianna Johnson was second in the 100, second in long jump and fourth in the 200.
Ilwaco junior Mya Cunningham placed second in the 800 (with NHS’s Aubrey Katyryniuk fourth) and fourth in the 400.
In field events, Naselle sophomore Paige Haataja was second in shot put with a throw of 23-10 and fifth in discus. IHS senior Abbiegail Williams was third in the discus with a toss of 59-8; sophomore Madison Key was third in javelin with a distance of 66-11.
For the boys, Ilwaco senior Jacob Mathison was second in the 400 and third in the 800, sophomore Cody Miller was second in the 1,600, with junior Sammy Lloyd third and Naselle’s Caesar Garcia fourth. Miller was third in the 200; Lloyd placed fourth in the 800.
In crowded field events each attracting more than 30 athletes, three IHS juniors excelled. Gage Thorne won the shot put with a personal best of 35-8, Caleb Brundage was second in the javelin with 117-2.75 and Skyler Saltzman was third in discus, throwing 98-0.
In team scores, Naselle girls won handily. For the boys, Toledo won with Naselle third and Ilwaco fourth.
