Sports Roundup: Ilwaco baseball, softball notch league wins

The Ilwaco baseball team romped over North Beach by a combined 44-0 margin last Tuesday, before falling to Toutle Lake 6-0 in non-league action on Thursday, dropping the Fishermen to 5-1 overall on the season.

In the first game against North Beach, Ilwaco raked the Hyak pitching staff for 18 hits in a 19-0 three-inning mercy rule victory. Senior Derrick Cutting contributed a team-high four hits, with fellow senior teammate Cannon Johnson and Jacob Rogers adding home runs. Ilwaco senior starting pitcher Kaemon Sawa pitched three innings, allowing only two hits with eight strikeouts in the win.

In the second game against North Beach, Ilwaco only needed two innings to reach the mercy rule threshold in a 25-0 victory. The Fishermen pounded the Hyaks for 19 runs in the first inning, then added six more in the second while amassing 16 hits, led by freshman Sawyer Linquist with a team-high four hits — including two doubles — and six RBIs. Ilwaco starting pitcher, eighth grader Haddox Hazen, picked up the win on the mound, allowing no hits while striking out four batters in two innings.

In the non-league game against Toutle Lake (6-0), a matchup of two of the premier 2B teams in the area, the Ducks broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Toutle Lake added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth while holding a potent Ilwaco scoreless, ending in a 6-0 victory for the Ducks. Ilwaco was held to a season-low two hits in the loss, while Fishermen starting pitcher Jacob Rogers pitched five innings allowing six runs and eight hits.

Ilwaco, currently 3-0 in league play, remains in second place behind first-place Forks (4-0). Through six games, Ilwaco sophomore Dylan Pelas (.667 batting average) has driven in a team-high 12 RBIs this season, including two home runs. Ilwaco seniors Ethan Hopkins (.500 avg) and Derrick Cutting (.643) are tied for a team-high nine hits.

Up next: Ilwaco will host Hoquiam (2-5) on Friday, April 5.

Ilwaco softballThe Ilwaco Lady Fishermen softball team (2-2) evened their overall season record after sweeping North Beach by a combined 36-4 score (22-3 and 14-1) in a league doubleheader last Tuesday. The Lady Fishermen were then shut out by Astoria in a non-league matchup on Wednesday.

In the first game, a five-inning 22-3 victory over North Beach, Ilwaco starting pitcher Megan Dille pitched five innings with 10 strikeouts while allowing only three hits. The Lady Fishermen were led by offensively by freshman Bailey Womack, who had a team-high three hits.

In the second game, a four-inning 14-1 win over North Beach, Ilwaco starting pitcher Emma Frame allowed only one run with five strikeouts. Ilwaco head coach A.J. Smith was pleased with the overall performance in the league win over the Hyaks, particularly the batting throughout the lineup.

“We played really well. Our one-inning jinx from the softball gods didn’t affect us. We played really well 1 through 9,” Smith said.

Following the sweep over North Beach, the Lady Fishermen were handed a three-inning 22-0 shutout loss by Astoria (5-3) in a non-league matchup the next day. Ilwaco junior ace Megan Dille pitched one inning in the loss, allowing five runs. The lone Ilwaco hit came from senior Kaitlyn Banuet.

“Every loss is my fault, every win is their fault. We just have to get back to the drawing board. No excuses. [Astoria] is a great team,” Smith said.

“The girls are working hard and getting better. We just have to get over the one-inning curse.”

Ilwaco, still 2-0 in league play, is currently in second place in the 2B Pacific League, trailing only Ocosta (4-0).

Up next: Ilwaco will host a doubleheader against Ocosta (4-0) on April 9.

Pe Ell/Willapa Valley softball

The Pe Ell/Willapa Valley softball team suffered their first league losses of the season last week, falling to Forks in a doubleheader.

The Titans (6-1-1) lost their first game 4-2 and second 8-5 to the Spartans (2-1). Junior Lorelei Smaciarz accounted for two of the eight total team hits in the first game, including a double. In the second game, Titan eighth grader Tylar Keeton and sophomore Jillian Hodel led the lineup with two hits each.

Up next: The Titans will next travel to take on North Beach (0-3) on Monday, April 15.

Pe Ell/Willapa Valley baseball

The Pe Ell/Willapa Valley baseball team notched two wins last week, improving to 6-1 overall on the season.

The Titans (6-1) split their doubleheader with Forks, including a 10-6 setback in the first game followed by a 9-5 victory on Tuesday, March 26.

The Titans then shut out Mossyrock (1-2) 11-0 on Friday, March 29.

The Titans, currently 1-1 in 2B Pacific League play, are in fourth place, trailing Ocosta, Ilwaco and Forks.

Up next: The Titans will host Toledo (2-1) in non-league action on Friday, April 5.

Naselle baseball

The Naselle baseball team (3-1) was idle last week after rain cancelled their scheduled league game last Thursday against Mossyrock (1-2).

Up next: Naselle will travel to take on Raymond/South Bend (1-4) on Thursday, April 4.

Raymond/South Bend baseballThe Raymond/South Bend baseball team slipped to 1-4 on the season after losing a doubleheader to Forks (5-1) last week.

The Ravens lost the first game to the Spartans 19-2, and fell 10-0 in the second. With the league losses, the Ravens fell to fifth place in league play.

Up next: Raymond/South Bend will host Naselle (3-1) on Thursday, April 4.

Raymond/South Bend softballThe Raymond/South Bend softball team (5-2) was idle last week after their games against Adna and Naselle were rained out.
