Whoosh! Track athletes fast out of the blocks: First results are great for Ilwaco, Naselle

RAYMOND — Athletes from Ilwaco and Naselle soared out of the starting blocks at the first track meet of the season that featured Raymond, North Beach, Tenino and Mary M. Knight.

With boys and girls competing in 30 events, excluding relays, Ilwaco or Naselle athletes were winners in 14.

One highlight was the battle between two seniors in their final track season. Ilwaco’s Jacob Mathison won the 800 meters in 2:23.93 with Naselle’s Derek Suomela a close second. The places were reversed in the 400, with Suomela winning the distance in 54.26 seconds, three seconds ahead of Mathison, having placed second at state last year. He also won the long jump with a leap of 19-5 and was third in high jump, clearing 5-8.

For the Fishermen, junior Wade Smith won the 200 in 25.81 seconds and was runner-up in the pole vault with 9-0, while classmate Caleb Brundage won the javelin with a throw of 115-3. Freshman Druv Athmanathan won the 3,200, just ahead of senior teammate Moises Mendez-Hernandez.

IHS girls were led by junior Mya Cunningham, who won the 400min 1:13.40 and 800 in 2:52.48. Sophomore Juliet Perez placed second in discus with 65-2 and second in shot put with 23-3.5.

For Naselle, freshman Caesar Garcia won the 1,600 in 5:39.57, eight seconds ahead of Ilwaco junior Sammy Lloyd in second.

The Comet girls were spearheaded by sophomore Mylee Dunagan, a state veteran, who won the 100 in 14.76 seconds plus high jump (4-10), long jump (14-4) and triple jump (30-4). Freshman Sophia Colombo won the 200 in 32.64 seconds, was second in the 100-meter hurdles and third in the 100. Sophomore Jessica Underhill won the discus with a throw of 73-10.

The other standout individual performance was from Raymond senior Austin Snodgrass, who won the 100, shot put and discus.

When the Raymond meet concluded, North Beach was ahead in team scores for boys, with Ilwaco second and Naselle next. For the girls, it was North Beach winning overall, followed by Naselle and then Ilwaco.
